ETHNIC AND RACIAL MINORITIES Discussion
WOW... What a week of work. Well this hour will be short. You may want to ensure you watched everything. Now as you learned about the Freedom Riders (or C.O.R.E), the East LA Walkouts, AIM and the No No Boys, start thinking about 4 contemporary movements that connect to the plights and struggles of the featured historical movements. Remember... you know what a social movement is. So to prepare you for week 6, you will actually do some research on your own to argue that these movements STILL matter. Your research project will be explained in Week 6.
However, you should already have an idea about the answers to the essential questions based on all the documentaries you watched this week:
What creates a social movement?
Why do social movements matter?
How do the actions of social movements inspire current social movements / events?
Your research questions differ slightly. You just have to know what the answers are to ensure your success. Please, do not ignore this process.
Last week you became aware of 4 social movements focusing on Ethnic Minorities in the US. I also keep reminding you to think about current movements or issues that compare to a historical movement. So it's time to begin the research activity. But first we will hopefully create partnerships with our classmates. Research is easier if we have research partners. So let's being. Plan to follow EACH step to ensure we all do the same work and effort.
Week 6 / Hour 2
Between now and the end of the week, you have 5 hours to complete your research paper. The following hours will have some tips in completing the assignment. It will benefit you to follow the guidance of hours 2 - 6.
The Plan of Action
Identify 3 elements that are similar between the selected historical movement and the current movement/issue. The purpose of this activity it to enable you to understand how valuable social movements contribute to the development of our democracy as a nation.
For example: Your selected movements might be AIM and Standing Rock. The 3 selected elements to compare are
1. the protection of indigenous land,
2. the protection of indigenous treaties
3. the protection of indigenous health.
The goal is to connect the past movements to the current movement/issue. Please note, social movements have stages. Some of your issues might be already in a stage.
The Structure
We will be developing a comparison essay following the "point-by-point" structure. You will use content from the unit (from week 5) and your researched information. Focus on the similarities (not differences)
For example , the structured outline will look like this:
Introduction: General information about BOTH AIM and Standing Rock
Thesis: The 3 similarities between AIM and Standing Rock are the protection of indigenous land, treaties and health.
Body Paragraph 1. The protection of indigenous land
A. AIM
B. Standing Rock
Body Paragraph 2. The protection of indigenous treaties
A. AIM
B. Standing Rock
Body Paragraph 3. The protection of indigenous health
A. AIM
B. Standing Rock
Conclusion: Final Thoughts
Inspiration
Make sure to really look at all the work we provided in the Padlet. Although you might find a better column and or topic than the one you chose, you may select any comparison you want. Select the one that will be easy on you and your week. Remember to partner up IF YOU CHOOSE. It is not mandatory to be with a partner, but do consider reaching out to your classmates regarding partnering up.
Here is a webpage from Texas State Tech with an outline of a point by point comparison oultline.
https://tstc.libguides.com/writing-compare/point
Let's take things step by step.
First step: Identify 3 comparison topics! Got it? Now proceed to Week 6 / Hour 3
Week 6 / Hour 3
You can take the following template and begin to fill it out. Copy and paste this on a working document. CHANGE IT to accommodate the selected topics.
Body Paragraph 1. Topic to Compare 1
A. Historical Movement
B. Contemporary movement/issue
Body Paragraph 2. Topic to Compare 2
A. Historical Movement
B. Contemporary movement/issue
Body Paragraph 3. Topic to Compare 3
A. Historical Movement
B. Contemporary movement/issue
Once you are complete with the following template, begin to find the research that will support your topic sentence. Keep record of your found research. You should use the Padlet, for the class did the research for you. I've enabled the comments for you to write anything. For example, you can have your own coding system like Body 2 / B.
Done with your outline? Proceed to Week 6 / Hour 4
Week 6 / Hour 4
Your outline is done. Your research plan is done. It is time to write your work. So let's first begin to write the BODY of your essay. But first, let's make sure you know what is required in the BODY of the essay.
1. The body breaks the information into point-by-point structure. It follows a consistent order when discussing the comparison.
2. When discussing the comparison, the writing demonstrates mastery of the unit.
3. Includes only the information relevant to the comparison. (As always... focus on the unit)
4. Research is used to support the information presented.
5. Provide a comment after each use of support. Comments are vital because all argumentative, data driven papers require you to link each research point in the support back to the thesis. Without such links, your reader will be unable to see how the selected support logically and systematically advances your argument.
6. Use transitions to enable a cohesive paper. In a compare essay, you also need to make links between A and B in the body of your essay if you want your paper to hold together. To make these links, use transitional expressions of comparison and contrast (similarly, moreover, likewise, on the contrary, conversely, on the other hand) and contrastive vocabulary.
7. Complete the written work for the body.
Week 6 / Hour 5
OMG. By this point, you have completed hardest part of the essay. Now it's time for the easy part - The introduction and conclusion. So let's go back to my example:
Introduction: General information about BOTH AIM and Standing Rock
Thesis: The 3 similarities between AIM and Standing Rock are the protection of indigenous land, treaties and health.
Body Paragraph 1. The protection of indigenous land
A. AIM
B. Standing Rock
Body Paragraph 2. The protection of indigenous treaties
A. AIM
B. Standing Rock
Body Paragraph 3. The protection of indigenous health
A. AIM
B. Standing Rock
Conclusion: Final Thoughts
The Introduction:
Notice how the outline states, "General information about BOTH AIM and Standing Rock." In the introduction, you are to prove basic information about your 2 selected comparative element. Here are some helpful tips before writing your thesis:
1. Start with a lead-in statement. Grab the attention of the reader
2. Identify the 2 comparable subjects. In the example above, they are AIM and Standing Rock.
3. Transition into your thesis. In the example above, I would change it to: Although AIM and Standing Rock are separated by years, the 3 similarities between AIM and Standing Rock are the protection of indigenous land, treaties and health.
The Conclusion:
Here are some helpful tips when writing your conclusion
1. Begin by restating the thesis. In the example above, I would change it to: As argued, AIM and Standing Rock were separated by years, yet the 3 similarities between AIM and Standing Rock demonstrated the value of social mobilization...
2. A summary of the 3 points.
3. A final statement/thought that connects to the lead-in statement used in the introduction. This enables the whole essay to connect.
All done? Proceed to Week 6 / Hour 6
Week 6 / Hour 6
You should be all done. So let's go to the actual assignment to view the rubric. Make sure to read it so you can ensure the best score possible. If you did not partner up with a classmate, I highly recommend asking a classmate to read your work. Or you can go to the FREE ONLINE TUTORING (Links to an external site.). You can submit your work and get it proof-read. But it does take time so plan accordingly.

The Requirements
1. Six paragraphs. An introduction, 4 body paragraphs and a conclusion.
2. A work cited page with all your used sources. A minimum of 4 sources must be applied (Freedom Riders, Taking Back the Schools, Wounded Knee, and Japanese-American No-No Boys explained). However, I suspect most will have more. The most important thing to ensure all information is properly cited to avoid plagiarism claims by Vericite. Therefore, anytime we have facts about anything, such as numbers, statistics, claims, names, paraphrasing or quotes, we must properly cite the source.
3. Read the rubric.
