Interests Assessment
O*NET resource center is a program/ website that provides information about thousands of occupations. The U.S Department of Labor develops the site. On the website, information is available to all job seekers. Job seeker's help icon, profession finding icon, advanced search, and crosswalks are open to anyone using the website. (ONLINE, 2020). For example, under finding an occupation icon, getting a job under the title job family is more comfortable. Job family means that the jobs are based upon skills, education, and training. A job seeker whose education relates to the occupation in the category can get necessary information about the field. Healthcare practitioners and healthcare support skill, for instance, is under the job family category. A job seeker with the skills, education, or training can understand the icon's types of skills or educational classes.
The resources offered are useful at present and also in the future. In my opinion, I would choose a resource from the website according to my love for specific subjects in class, area of specialty, or skills. The O*Net website provides an option where one can choose to obtain data depending on their abilities, interests, knowledge, skills, work activities, work context, work styles, and values. Anyone can benefit from this program as long as they know what they are searching for specifically. For instance, the crosswalks search gives military options to research the military grounds and get the branches' necessary information.
My current career industry is working for BNSF as an intermodal equipment operator. According to the O*Net website, our role is to plan, work safely concerning big machinery, communication, and confer with the trainmaster. The part also involves education, hazmat knowledge, or expertise in driving and operating different machines. The website details the tasks given: technology skills, detailed work activities, credentials, wages &employment trends, and job openings. At the end of the description, a link connects the web to the job employer.
With the current pressure and studies, I still aspire to have a better position, like working as a field Human Resources specialist. The workplace diversity team has inspired me to teach and help the field employees such as myself. The career falls under transportation and operations. In human resources, it involves teaching necessary skills, reinforcing behaviors, provide knowledge, and serving the good of employees and the company.
There are a few steps that I would need to take to achieve this career. First, research the job I want to pursue in this scenario, human resources specialist. For the technical skills like computer-based training software, office suite software, spreadsheet software, and word processing software, a little training would do. Compared to the current career, I have mastered a few skills as computer-based training software and electronic mail software, and therefore do not need training twice.
Gaining knowledge about this career is an important step. As I work towards being a human resources specialist, education and training are essential; adapting to an entirely new work field. Understanding English and body language are also crucial, knowing the meaning of different words and structures. Psychology is also essential in this career because I will study human behavior, experiencing people of all cultures and backgrounds—this among other skills I need to know before I get into the profession.
