UNIT 3: THE PROPOSAL PAPER

THE ASSIGNMENT (80 PTS)

Construct a proposal essay to solve a local problem. You may, if you wish, use your evaluation from the first unit as a jumping off point. Note, though, that identifying the problem (as your evaluation topic would do) should only consist of a very small portion of the essay. The bulk of your essay will consist of proving your argument that the proposed solution to the problem you identify would be effective and feasible. For more information on proposals, revisit Chapter 11 of Read, Reason, Write.

REQUIREMENTS

1,500 words-

At least four credible sources-

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

Your bibliography should have your list of sources. The list should be formatted according to MLA 8 standards. And under each cited source, include a short paragraph (at least three sentences) explaining why you’ve decided to use the coinciding source in your essay (25pts).

DUE DATES

First Draft – April 10th

Annotated Bibliography – April 12th

Final Draft – April 17th

ADDITIONAL INFO

For this essay, even more than the previous two, your grade will be reflective of your execution of the elements of argument we have considered throughout the semester both in the essays and the debate. That is, your proposal—in addition to your consideration of feasibility and effectiveness—must demonstrate an attention to the appeals of rhetoric (ethos, pathos, logos, kairos), relevant counterarguments, and appropriate backing for your presented evidence and claims. You may not propose on the following: parking. Yes, just that one topic. Do. Not. Do. It.

TIPS

Are there problems you see on a daily basis that you wish would be considered by your school or the local government? Perhaps there aren’t enough organizations on campus to suit your social needs, or maybe you feel you haven’t been advised well in your time here. Maybe you’ve noticed there is an issue with local graffiti or litter (you will have to be specific as to the location and content). Whatever problem you identify, make sure you choose a topic that stirs you to action.
