Unit 3 Discussion 1-Student 2
When I think of creative, I used to think of it as a form of art – after beginning this course I quickly learned it is not only in a
form of art, but everyone has a creative side to them and it comes in all different forms. In fact as Burnett states in his video,
creativity is not a very magical think, it is actually a pretty simple thing to understand, all humans are naturally creative where
toolmakers and builders by nature (Burnett, B., 2015).
I had a previous boss who really encouraged creativity and would always tell me to brainstorm of new marketing techniques for
the company and this was an ongoing challenge for me. It was a small office, with only 6 of us and felt I was left to fend for
myself, while no one else was asked to brainstorm. At times he would tell me he expected more from me knew I was capable of
more. I could tell he would get frustrated, although I knew he believed in me, I didn’t know how to brainstorm properly and felt
hopeless because I didn’t have the skills to do it. He would tell me that I belonged at a bigger company where I could “fit-in”
better. I wish I would have known this material then, as I think I would have been able to bring more to the team and benefit the
company. I later left the company and of course moved to a larger company. I am very happy with my move, and my boss
encourages and supports my growth by encouraging me to take development courses and to pursue my MBA.
As a future innovative leader I am starting to learn to transform my work, by wanting to do things differently and changing my
behavior, which in return I will learn new skills. Evolving beyond past success requires an organization to rethink the past and
unlearn those practices and principles that need to stay in the past and to reinvent the new organization that will lead them into
the future (Denison. D., Hooijberg. R., & Leif, C., 2012). As I am changing my behavior my team can see that and they will want
to follow that – especially in a leadership role.
