Impressionism Composers

Founder of Impressionism

Preferred to use unconventional scales

Criticized for being unconventional

Compositions did not reflect the old style and were quite dissonant in some parts

Claude Debussy – Clair de lune – Seong-Jin Cho

Use of the pedal – allows for long sustained notes, color blending

Fluid, flexible tempo

Blocked chord accompaniment in left hand – melody in right hand

Homorhythmic accompaniment

Broken chord (arpeggiated) accompaniment

Notice voicing outer notes (high and low “pinky” notes) given more volume, quieter inner notes

Left hand takes over melody – right hand Alberti Bass accompaniment

Left hand homorhythmic accompaniment (same rhythm as melody)

Return of the main theme and broken chord accompaniment

Notice voicing outer notes (high and low “pinky” notes) given more volume, quieter inner notes
