Quantitative Needs Assessment Methods
Aspect Survey Epidemiology Other Methods
Purpose Determine the perspective of groups about need areas.
Obtain ratings as well as open- ended comments about needs.
Compare the current prevalence of a situation with the future incidence of the situation.
There are numerous other quantitative techniques that can be applied to the Needs Assessment such as task analyses, risk assessments, etc., to ascertain needs.
Some specialized methods are used for more future-oriented Needs Assessments.
Ease of Implementation Relatively easy with some know- how.
Relatively difficult without specialized training and analytical skills.
Relatively easy with some know- how.
Cost Considerations Moderate to low if the survey works well, medium to high if it doesn't.
Moderate but will be higher if special data collection is required sucha as surveys and/or interviews.
Generally inexpensive unless intensive field work becomes necessary such as in certain task analyses.
Value of Information Obtained Moderate to high. Moderate to high and in some areas very high.
Moderate to high depending on the circumstances and what the data requirements of the situation are.
Issues The majority of the needs assessment survey do not use the necessary double scaling.
Return rates can be low, and results may be skewed or biased.
Usually complex in terms of statistics.
Estimates can be off especially as applied to fields other than health.
For some of these methods, good examples are not found in the literature such as the coupling of needs and risk assessments.
Overall used less frequently than surveys.
