Unit 3: Healthcare Technology: Local, National, and Global Considerations

From instructor:

Not having worked in public health, I have been involved in natural disasters resulting in emergency preparedness. Facing a situation like this would certainly be daunting to say the least. Even with the best preceptor and orientation, please keep in mind, you are not alone nor have the sole responsibility, in real life, to handle this independently. Granted you would certainly be involved in many aspects of it, however keep in mind the focus of this week’s discussion is to identify resources, what they mean, how to use them and how to effectively create and implement a solution or plan.

Keep in mind, depending on the speed for which the disease is spreading and the scope will also outline who you contact as well as how urgently this needs to happen. It is always good to start small and step up logically. As you can imagine, an influenza pandemic could raise fear and panic in a community so it is our responsibility to assure due diligence is done for the greater good. Price, 2015 shares scenarios of global pandemics, although not to influenza, that required access, collaboration and communication with national and global leaders and organizations.

I am curious if any of you have been in such a situation. If so, could you share your experience, the pros, the cons and most importantly the lessons learned so that we all can benefit from it😊

*Imagine that you are a public health nurse, and you and your colleagues have determined that the threat of a deadly new strain of influenza indicates a need for a mass inoculation program in your community. What public health data would have been used to determine the need for such a program? Where would you locate public health data? What data will be collected to determine the success of such a program? How might you communicate this to other communities or internationally?
