Domestic Terrorism Incident in The United States of America
Domestic Terrorism Incident in The United States of America
In this century, terrorism is spreading its tentacles all across the world with its numerous manifestations. Undoubtedly, the superpower, the United States of America, is also bearing the utmost consequences of terrorism, especially in the form of rising domestic terrorism. Domestic terrorism has surprisingly changed the spectrum of homeland security and human safety in the US (Borgeson, 2018).
The incident of 9/11 is the major case in point in this perspective. The prime rationale to select this case is to evaluate the far-reaching impacts of terrorism on homeland security. Ostensibly, this incident became the potent reason for the expansion of terrorism not only inside the borders of the US but also beyond the borders. The attack on the world trade center in 2001 was a watershed point in American history that ultimately started the debate of religious extremism, racism, and ethnicity. Therefore, this case is directly linked with homeland security.
According to the reports of the center for strategic and international studies, the attack of September 11 caused a magnitude death toll of above 3000 that shaped US counter-terrorism policy. Resultantly, the war on terror began that eventually engulfed many regions since 2001, and it is still going on with its immense impacts on human safety, economy, societies, and homeland security. Furthermore, this unfortunate episode of 9/11 also radicalized American society, which posed a serious threat to the democratic values and homeland security agenda (Hughes, 2020). Psychological warfare had begun through social media.
The far-right supporters started entering into the banned organizations. A June study by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) reported the accelerated trend of extremism with a ratio of 90 percent in 2020. Hence, these mass-level behavioral changes inside the territory had shaken the agenda of human safety and progress.
Similarly, another main purpose of choosing this case study is to highlight separatist or supremacist attacks on the citizens. American people started considering themselves as superior and others as terrorists. Therefore, this tragedy is a clear instance of domestic terrorism. The chain of its impacts does not end here as it had also negatively affected diplomatic relations of America with other countries.
Owing to its vital national interests, the US started developing its relationships with a security lens in international politics (Borgeson, 2018). Understanding its economic impacts, the US faced the loss of almost three trillion dollars coupled with the loss of hundreds of American citizens due to this global war, which started to ensure its homeland security and America first policy. Hence, domestic terrorism is flexing its muscles in the US that has roots in the September 11 attack in 2001, and it escalated homegrown extremism that threatened American homeland security.
