Unit 2 Discussion: Through the Looking Glass
This unit talks about self-identity, and what influences how we think of ourselves. In responses to your classmates, let your peers know what you think about their identity based on what they have written in this discussion board. (Please respond to at least two classmates' posts.)
Your post should contain both your personal opinions in response to the questions, as well as information you have learned from your textbook readings.
ALYSSA’S POST:
I already knew how different perception is, The way that I see myself is so much different than the way that others view me. So many people look down on themselves whether it be looks feelings or emotions. There are so many different and beautiful people in this world. I have always had an issue with self-esteem. I always think I am not pretty enough. I have always wanted thicker hair and fuller lips and to be taller. There have been so many people ( my finance being one of them) has heard me say at times how I hate certain things about my looks and the way that they have explained me and I explain me was always so much different. I have friends whom I see as such beautiful people and they see nothing but ugliness because that is what they have grown up watching and reading was not perfect or beautiful. I always see so much beauty in others but always had a hard time seeing my own beauty. I have already over the years taken so many steps to raise my self-esteem. I have started seeing all the amazing things that I have accomplished and the beautiful kids I have raised and it has made me see the beauty in myself. My kids are a part of me and they are all so smart and so beautiful. I have looked at all the people that I have helped and seen how they view me and it has made me see my beauty as well. I have always wanted and tried to make people see how beautiful they truly are. I think if society would stop saying you have to be a certain way to be beautiful then everyone would start seeing the beauty that they hold.
BRITTANEY’S POST:
Watching the Dove beauty sketches video and listening to each stranger’s interpretation of others versus, their own interpretation of their selves. Was a very interesting and kind of a wow moment, it has influenced my thoughts on self-identity for the better. It also gave me a chance to look at it, from both perspectives, helping me to see things within myself and helped me with more understanding, and an overall outlook on self-identity and self-esteem together. Watching how some described themselves in one way than how someone else looking at them saw them, was truly beautiful. I would say, it has allowed me to see that we all as humans in some way shape or form are way too harsh on our self-appearance whether we realize it or not, and that I’m not the only one that has felt or experienced this at times. Our self-appearance is so much more than we realize it to be, it goes deep. We compare ourselves to each other more than we even realize at times without even knowing that we are doing it.
Honestly, the more I begin to truly know myself and learn to love myself, the more I see that self-identity is much more than just our outer appearance. Some steps I am currently using as well as some that I feel would be great to recommend to anyone to personally enhance self-esteem. Is learning who you are, and how we see and feel about ourselves deep down within and not just focusing on the outward appearance. It goes way beyond just our outer physical appearance as well as what others see when they look at us. “Truly being committed to oneself for improvement”, and Willing to learn who they truly are and what our own beliefs are now, versus how we were raised? I feel this will assist me or any of us in accepting ourselves fully for who we are deep within, as well as in “accepting who we are now is always a starting point for any change”, as mentioned in chapter 3 on “accepting that you are in the process.” I believe helps to build up own personal self-esteem deep within. Versus working only on one self’s physical appearance fully focusing on loving ourselves for being our own authentic selves. Learning how to accept each flaw within us inwardly or outwardly whether we want to or not and realizing there is no need for us to compare ourselves to others or to judge another because each of us is beautifully flawed and unique in our own ways.

Unit 2 DB: To rewrite or not to rewrite....
Self-plagiarism is a very common form of plagiarism in the English classroom, and most universities do not allow self-plagiarism.
Responses: Do you agree with your peers' arguments regarding the scenario? Explain to your classmates and/or instructor how your understanding of the ramifications of self-plagiarism is the same or different from other responses. Finally, you can answer the question asked by your classmate.

SARAH’S POST:
I would talk with the writer of the publication and explain to he/she the dangers of plagiarism. Rather the writer purposefully didn't cite the original author's work or he/she forgot. The readers aren't going to care and there could be serious consequences behind it. you can get possibly sued, lose your job, lose your credibility, get the cooperation sued, and get withdrawn out of school. I would rewrite the publication. I would do an anti-plagiarism checklist; online checkers are the best ti use! When rewriting the paper: make sure you use your own words, rewrite the entire paper, use quotations, cite, and summarize. I re-read all material several times to gain insight into the main ideas that the author is trying to subject the reader to.
CARLOS’S POST:
Hello Classmates,
In this scenario, I would say that I would not sue the other writer for fraud unless I had published the work first. I would think that this could impact that writer's career for the reason that he does not know how to communicate appropriately. Every business is always a tiny world. Someone always knows someone because of networking. People talk, and other publishers would lose trust and possibly interest in that writer for lack of communication; no one wants a scandal against their own company, especially if it makes them look bad. That could not be good for business. I would say this is relatable to work in the class because if that person already submitted it, cite and in your reference and create a new one. You shouldn't be lazy and offer the same paper when you can reference it and get a better product. Would you seek to ruin that writer's reputation because of his laziness and lack of work ethic, or do you think you wouldn't do much, and his reputation would destroy on its own because people talk?
THIS IS THE DISCUSSION QUESTION WITH THE SCENARIO:
Initial Response: Consider the following scenario: You work as an editor publishing creative nonfiction essays at a popular publication. Creative nonfiction essays are essays written based on real events. Publications such as The New Yorker or the aptly titled Creative Nonfiction Journal are examples of publications that publish creative nonfiction. The publication you work for accepts the work of a new writer. You publish that writer's essay only to find out that the writer previously published the essay in another magazine. The writer did not reveal it was being published by someone else. In one paragraph answer the following questions: As an editor for the journal, what actions would you take for the journal? Would you sue the writer for fraud? Do you think this situation will impact the writer’s career? In what way does this situation pertain to self-plagiarism in the classroom? Finish your response by asking your peers a question about this scenario that they can answer in their peer responses.
