After reviewing the topic options given, I decided to base my focus on overcrowding in correctional facilities. Here, I will be discussing on overcrowding in male correctional facilities. Prison overcrowding is seen to create a great risk to inmates and the correctional officers who work there (Cruz, X., 2020). It is seen that prison systems and county jails are nearly all either at or over capacity. This results to inmates, who are mostly males, being forced to sleep on the floor or in the dayroom. These inmates get little opportunity to go outdoors to exercise or get fresh air. The Steering Committee of Humanitarian Response has represented hundreds of men in class action lawsuits where they challenge the consequences of severe overcrowding. This causes issues such as violence and excessive use of force by the corrections officers as they try to bring order after chaos which has been created. In addition, overcrowding in correctional facilities has led to poor medical care and intolerable living conditions. For example, Fulton County Jail, a male correctional facility, began sending hundreds of inmates to southwest Georgia in an effort to ease overcrowding (Robinson, M., 2018). Therefore, it is important that other correctional facilities be set up in order to prevent the current overcrowding in prison.
