Title of presentation: Why we have too few women leaders

Link: https://www.ted.com/talks/sheryl_sandberg_why_we_have_too_few_women_leaders

Length of presentation:14:58

Summary

This speech by Sheryl Sandberg is meant to persuade women in the globe to stay in the workforce and work their ways to the top. This speech tries to convince women to take stronger stances and compete with men in the workforce.

Discussion

The first video was an informative discussion in which Sandberg discussed how women could increase their confidence level and stay in their careers. Some give up too early and should challenge themselves to be persistent and not give in to the accepted norm. A shift in traditional ideals has caused roles to change, and this is a step in a positive direction for women's equality in the workplace. Sandberg says this will also result in more leadership opportunities for women (Sandberg, (n.d.)). Women have made progress in lifting the glass ceiling that has hovered over them for years. There are still many inequities that exist, and many reported cases of women receiving a lower salary than men, even when they have the same job. Equal pay for equal work will help to level the field. The perception of the roles of men and women in society need to change in order to have more equality in the workplace. If there is a change in the mindset, then there will also be a change inequality. Sandberg stresses that a woman can have a family and a successful career too.

Ethos

Ethos plays a critical role in Sandberg’s speech to gain credibility from the audience (Sandberg, (n.d.)). By addressing in her speech that she is the Chief Operating Officer of Facebook as well as a self-made businesswoman, this helped to catch the audience’s attention as she gives herself the prestigious, successful title she deserves. Moreover, she develops ethos by understanding her audience who were women hence applying herself as a credible woman to the audience.

Pathos

Pathos played a critical role in Sandberg’s speech. This is seen in the way Sandberg draws to the audience’s attention by talking about her experiences with her kids as well as having a full job all at the same time. In this case, she even talks about her daughter tugs on her.

Logos

It played a major role in Sandberg speech by supporting all she is saying with statistics as well as facts. The facts and statistics helped the speech to be more believable to the audience.

Presentation 2:

Speaker: Verna Myers

Title of presentation: How to overcome our biases? Walk boldly toward them

Link: https://www.ted.com/talks/verna_myers_how_to_overcome_our_biases_walk_boldly_toward_them

Length of presentation: 17:49

Summary

Verna Myers explains how biases affect everything we do in life. The speech aimed at bringing awareness to the public that is stereotyped and creating biases without realizing it. The audience is individuals who are one-sided as well as close-minded. The speech is meant to those who just conclude on an issue without taking time to get to the bottom of the issue.

Discussion

In the second video, Myers explains how our subconscious often dictates our reactions even though people try to act like biases don't exist (Myers, (n.d.)). She tells people to realize their biases and face them head-on. Only then will they be able to lead more effectively and have peace of mind. The discussion has important relevance in today's society as struggles with bias continue. This was a persuasive talk about trying to get people to understand how bias affects them.

Ethos

This is shown in the speech as Verna Myers represents herself in a positive manner and appears to be well educated. In this case, I feel that Verna Myers is credible due to her degrees and her corporation.

Pathos

This speech demonstrates pathos as well tries to get an emotional response from the audience. Also, she tones her voice as she makes her points (Myers, (n.d.)). She seems aggressive in sometimes and very soft at other times. This is meant towards bringing the issue to the audience’s attention.

Logos

Verna Myers applied logos to her speech with facts, graphs as well as charts. She even demonstrated how a white woman was afraid being in what she referred the hood or asking help from an African American man.

Comparison of presentations

I think Sandberg was more successful at making her point. She used a clear rhetorical triangle by presenting the question, providing evidence and arriving at a logical conclusion. The second speaker tended to focus on particular stories but not enough specific detail or supporting facts about the topic, so the rhetorical triangle was not as successful.
