Unit 1and 2 Mastery Assignment

Directions:

· Read and annotate the article provided. You will find the pdf of this article in the Unit 1 Module on Canvas.

· Annotate does not merely mean to highlight and/or underline all overland r your paper. This can be done by printing the article out or by using online annotation tools.

HOW TO ANNOTATE NONFICTION:

· CIRCLE title.

· Identify information about the author, source, and publication date.

· TURN all subheadings into questions,

· CIRCLE all text features ( bullets, subheadings, pictures, graphs, diagrams etc)

· Identify the topic/subject , any Background Information about the topic

· HIGHLIGHT any repetition, Author’s Bias, restatement, and rhetorical questions

· UNDERLINE cause and effect, compare-contrast, chronological, etc.)

· ANSWER questions you created from subheadings

· Put (PARENTHESES) around vocabulary

· Summarize paragraphs, Make predictions, Formulate opinions (agree or disagree with the author), Make connections

· Ask questions (Clarify/Connect/Conclude)

· Analyze author’s point of view

· Write reflections/reactions/comments. I want to see a minimum of a 200 word reflection piece of how you can apply this article specifically to YOU.

· Put screenshots or a pdf of your annotated article in your google drive folder by 9/28

· There will be no exceptions for late annotations. Don’t wait until the last minute is essentially what I’m saying!

· They will go onto Unit 1 quiz AND/OR Test 1. This is an all or nothing. If I believe you did not do all of the above, you will not get any points. This is a time consuming grade for me, and I do not want my time wasted. You may receive up to 20 total percentage points. For example: If you got an 85% on quiz 1 and a 95% on quiz 2, you will get a 100% for both. 15% applied to quiz 1 and 5% applied to quiz 2. You cannot get over 100%.
