Major Project: Strategic Business Plan (15% + 15% + 25% = 55 %)

The major project provides students the opportunity to demonstrate – in an applied and practical fashion - the learning outcomes of the course. During the term of the course, students will craft and analyze a proposed new international business venture of their choice.  Students must choose a foreign host country that is different from their home country and culture. Canadian and American students will be asked to plan for a business that will operate in a country other than Canada and the United States as a target for their business plan.

This Major Project consists of 3 deliverables and are detailed on the course site.

"Before you journey, observe the wind carefully, detect its direction, and then follow it. You will get to your destination twice as fast with half the effort”. - Chin-Ning Chu (a Chinese born American business author and management expert).

International Business Strategy is a challenging introductory/ formative course that examines the fundamentals of international business strategy. Students will learn the terminology of international business strategy and the tools, variables and processes that must be considered by international business managers in order to establish or expand operations in international markets. Students will study a number of strategic concepts and notions that may be employed in assessing the potential – and associated risks – for doing business in foreign markets, and will analyze how forces such as culture, economics, politics, and geography influence business and markets.

Students will undertake a case-study oriented approach to supporting their reflective and informed findings by selecting and applying appropriate international-business strategic-analysis tools. Drawing on their own experiences and previous business knowledge, and then employing the notions, concepts and tools presented in this course, students will further develop their business management skills in order to effectively craft and execute contemporary international business strategy.

“The essence of critical thinking and reflective thought is for you to:

Arrive at an analyzed perspective

by evaluating the author’s arguments and

uncovering their key assumptions and hypothesis.” (View the hand)

Five steps when you're asked to critically think about an issue, problem, or reading:

Step 1: What is the issue or question to be examined?

Step 2: What data and information is provided by the author to support answers to the question or issue you are examining?

Step 3: Evaluate the robustness (quality) of the evidence provided by the author .

 Step 4: Analyze the data by asking the “so what?” questions.

Step 5: Having reflected and undertaken critically thought about the issues you are now in a position to set out your findings.

The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning Organizations

Strategists shape their reality :

through systems thinking;

by continuously seeking personal mastery;

by demonstrate a willingness to adopt new mental models;

by exhibit the ability to build a shared vision within their organization; and

they promote and champion team-based learning organizations.

A New Mental Model

In any company (FISH) , the real source of profit is thousands of individual actions by individual employees. Add value to each of these acts, and you add profit. The aim of corporate values is to add that value. In every act. All the time

How do you build nimble transformational organizations.,

How do you mobilize and monetize the imagination of every employee, every day?

TPS?

How do you create organizations with engagement in the work place-

citizen or employee?

The Internet of Things

Today the most significant strategic challenge you will face within your organizations will be the Internet of Things (IoT).  Indeed I call it the Internet of Everything (IoE). We are on the cusp of a new industrial revolution! Old business models and strategies designed to address to challenges of the last industrial age increasingly are being challenged.  You must adopt a strategist perspective to survive. There will only be two classes of organizations - ‘the quick or the dead’. These classifications will be true for all sectors - profit, not for profit and public. Strategic leadership demands reflective and critical thinking about how organizations can exploit the opportunities and mitigate the damage presented by this emerging new digital age realty.

In this Unit we underscored the critical importance of organizations’ strategic leaders (you) to adopt the role of a futurist – a dreamer reflecting on where the new opportunities will take their organizations. So I challenge you - as we increasingly share ‘the collaborative commons’…   what will be the impact of the New Zero Marginal Cost Society on your organization / country? {Rifkin, 2014}
