Identifying Statistical Terms

Use this template to document your knowledge about basic statistical tests that counselors often encounter. This template will prove useful when you take the final quiz in this course, as you move forward in your master’s program, and when you study for your licensing exam. Download a copy of the template to your computer, and complete the columns throughout the course, beginning with Unit 4. This assignment is due in Unit 10. Use the course text and/or outside resources to complete the chart. The more complete and correct you make your entries, the more useful the chart will be to you. Be sure to document your sources so that you can revisit them in the future, if necessary. If you choose, you may add rows to include additional entries.

Statistic

Description

(use of the statistic)

Level of Measurement: nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio

Example of Application:

(Summarize or give an example of how you might see this term in a study)

Mean

Middle or Average of a grouping of numbers

Interval

IQ/Personality Assessments

Median

The Median is the value found at the exact middle of the distribution.

Ordinal

16,17,19,19,20,23,25,27,29 you can see that the value 20 separates the distribution exactly in half.

Mode

The Mode is simply the most frequent score in the distribution. On the polygon, the mode is the score at the peak of the distribution.

Norminal

Estimation of wanting to know what the outcome is likely to be.

Range

Differences between the maximum and the minimum values.

Ordinal

Measuring spread of Data.

Standard Deviation

The standard deviation (s.d.) is a commonly used summary measures of variation or spread of a set of data. It is typical distance from the mean.

Interval

Correlations

Correlation is a statistical technique that is used to measure and describe the strength and direction of the relationship between two variables

Interval

Multiple regression

Multiple regression is an extension of simple linear regression. It is use when we want to predict the value of a variable based on the value of two or more other variables.

Interval

Factor analysis

Factor analysis is a statistical method used to describe variability among observed, correlated variables in terms of a potentially lower number of unobserved variable called factors.

Interval

Chi square

Nominal

T-test

A t-test is an analysis is analysis of two populations means through the use of statistical examination.

ANOVA

Which is the Analysis of Variation is a statistical method used to test differences between two or more means.

Interval
