Corrections

For this assignment I have chosen to research the historical perspective of corrections as one of the main areas of Criminal Justice. I selected the topic ‘Corrections’ because it acts as part of the criminal justice system, offering curriculums and homes for lawbreakers found guilty of criminal acts that impose their loss of liberty. When an individual is arrested, put in prison, and released, they face many challenges. Upon release, the prisoners find it hard to reintegrate back into the community as they are frequently denied housing and jobs. Fortunately, Corrections offer reentry programs that help people who have been lately released integrate back into the community. Reentry programs assist in finding them jobs, housing, and resources to build them up.

The aforementioned benefits make corrections the best and interesting topic to study as it helps one give back to the society. Corrections limit the opportunities of a person to commit more crimes in a community. The topic is broken down into probation, prison life, parole, prisons and jobs, and community corrections (Sparks and Gacek, 2019). Probation means a period of proving or trial. In Criminal Justice, corrections describe a variety of tasks usually performed by government agencies and involving the treatment, penalties, and supervision of persons or people found guilty. Subsequently, the responsibility of the correctional system is to make sure the judgment of the lawbreaker is carried out, regardless of whether it is time in prison, probation, or community corrections. The concept of corrections is making something, such as a bad condition accurate and right (Sparks and Gacek, 2019). Research conducted by Jones and Bartlett Learning (n.d) shows that Augustus developed the basic procedure of the recent probation system: carrying out a presentence investigation, consenting conditions of probation, extending a caseload, reporting the case to the court, and retracting the sentence. Additionally, the major punishment philosophies of corrections are rehabilitation, retribution, incapacitation, and deterrence.

Deterrence is the act of scaring the criminal with threats of punishment. Rehabilitation in law implies reinstating a criminal to a law-abiding way of life. Retribution is identified as the payment of a debt to the community and the compensation of a person’s crime. Lastly, restoration is a theory of justice that accentuates mending the damage resulted from the crime. Corrections is a significant theme of criminal justice as it brings people to legal subjection.
