Summary

3.OA.5 PROPERTIES OF MULTIPLICATION APPLYING PROPERTIES OF OPERATIONS

AS STRATEGIES TO MULTIPLY AND DIVIDE. If 6 x 4 = 24 is known, then 4 x 6 = 24 is

also known. (Commutative Property of multiplication.) 3 x 5 x 2 can be found by 3 x 5 = 15,

then 15 x 2 = 30, or by 5 x 2 = 10, then 3 x 10 = 30. Associative property of multiplication.)

Knowing that 8 x 5 = 40 and 8 x 2 = 16, one can find 8 x 7 as 8 x (5 + 2) = (8 x 5) + (8 x 2) = 40

+ 16 = 56. (Distributive property.)

This third grade Math standard is what I used to create my Word outline to PowerPoint

assignment. This standard is sometimes hard for students to get if they don’t know how to

multiply and divide. I tried to incorporate some vocabulary with the different properties to teach

my students the difference in each one of them. To teach this standard I will introduce the

following words:

COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY

• What is the commutative property of multiplication?

• Commutative comes from the word “commute” which can be defined as to move around

or travel

• The commutative property of multiplication states changing the order of the number we

are multiplying, does not change the product.

• If 6 x 4 = 24 is known, then 4 x 6 = 24 is also known.

• If 5 x 4 = 20 is known, then 4 x 5 = 20 is also known.

ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTY OF MULTIPLICATION

• What is the associative property of multiplication?

• To “associate” means to connect or join with something.

• The associative property of multiplication states that the product of three or more

numbers remains the same regardless of how the numbers are grouped.

• 3 x 5 x 2 can be found by 3 x 5 = 15, then 15 x 2 =30

• 3 x 5 x 2 can also be found by 5 x 2 = 10, then 3 x 10 = 30

DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY OF MULTIPLICATION

• What is the distributive property of multiplication?

• To “distribute” means to divide something or give a share or part of something.

• The distributive property of multiplication states, multiplying the sum of two or more

addends by a number will give the same result as multiplying each addend individually

by the number and then adding the products together.

• One can find 8 x 7 as 8 x (5 + 2) = (8 x 5) + (8 x 2) = 40 + 16 = 56
