Developing Anticipation and Activating Prior Knowledge

Strategy #1

Identify the text: Visual Literacy Text

Description of the strategy and explanation of how it will be used with the students: The

Visual literacy model of the process of photosynthesis . This model is very eye-catching and

students will be actively engaged. The model is very colorful and vibrant. Each student will

receive a copy of the visual model that will require them to fill out each step of the process. Each

student will also be required to write a descriptive essay explaining the overall purpose of

photosynthesis. The essay must elaborate on who , what , when , where and how.

List literacy and content area standards met by this activity:

L.5.3A- Students will demonstrate an understanding of photosynthesis and the transfer of

energy from the sun into chemical energy necessary for plant growth and survival.

RL.5.7Analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone, or

beauty of a text (e.g., graphic novel, multimedia presentation of fiction, folktale, myth,

poem).

TSW demonstrate how light energy is captured by chloroplasts and converted to chemical energy

(glucose) from CO2 and H20 by doing a flow chart. TSW also explain the importance of the

process of photosynthesis.

Strategy #2

Identify the text: Non Fiction (Informational)

Description of the strategy and explanation of how it will be used with the students:

The Non Fiction (Informational) model will be implements to helo student build their vocabulary

as well as comprehension skills through literacy. Being that photosynthesis is a real life process

students will receive applicable information .This strategy is also useful being that students do

not always have the adequate background in science.

List literacy and content area standards met by this activity:

L.5.3A- Students will demonstrate an understanding of photosynthesis and the transfer of

energy from the sun into chemical energy necessary for plant growth and survival.

RL.5.3Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or

drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact).

TSW Explain the role of light and pigments in photosynthesis. Explain the role of electron

carrier molecules in photosynthesis.TSW will list and describe the benefits of photosynthesis to

the overall life cycle

Identify the text: Media Item (Audio/Video)

Description of the strategy and explanation of how it will be used with the students:

Students will use this strategy to become engaged in the overall purpose of the video on the

topic of photosythesis. This video will allow students to expand on their knowlege of plants and

how plants are vital within the ecosystem.

List literacy and content area standards met by this activity:

L.5.3A- Students will demonstrate an understanding of photosynthesis and the transfer of

energy from the sun into chemical energy necessary for plant growth and survival.

RL.5.7Analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone, or

beauty of a text (e.g., graphic novel, multimedia presentation of fiction, folktale, myth,

poem).

Plants are the backbone of our ecosystem . Plants play a role of food and oxygen for living

things. Without plants many living things will not exist. Plants play a role in every food

chain that is often time not recognized. . This will be beneficial to students to acquire

knowledge on things that may have not addressed on previous grade levels
