Chapter 2 Discussion
The Uniform Crime Report (UCR) Program assess the crime rate for the entire country. The objective of the UCR Program consist of reliable set of crimes statistics that can be used in law enforcement administration, operation, management. The program has provided information on fluctuations in the level of crime for criminologist, sociologists, legislators, municipal planners, and the media.
The National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) is a program built to collect detailed information about incidents. It has two processes one to enhance the quality, quantity, and timeliness of crime statistical data collected by law enforcement entities, the second one is to improve the methodology used for compiling, analyzing, auditing, and publishing the collected crime data. It works together with the UCR Program by collecting its data.
The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), further broaden our understanding of crime with information from official measures of crime. They also use the UCR for their data as well. They intend to identify portions of the population at the risk of victimization, they estimate the multiple victimization rates, also provide data needed to evaluate crime prevention programs, and lastly allows for comparison of patterns, amounts and locations of crime using the Uniform Crime Reports. In conclusion they are known for the program to give them a better understanding of how many people get affected by crimes, and provides a better visual to the “ dark figure of crime.”
In overall they have do work within one another, they all support each other in different ways and how different outcomes due to the reason of the program. But they do use the same data just in different ways. Thanks to the UCR and its yearly reports that the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the U.S Department of Justice publish.
But for me the program I would use to would be The National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). For the fact it used the data of the UCR and it gives it a more of an enhanced approach. The program processes one to enhance the quality, quantity, and timeliness of crime statistical data which the UCR system doesn’t attend to. It in just very simple words analysis the information more detailed the the UCR, when that program just analysis the information.
