Biology
Meiosis is the mechanism by which a single cell splits divides two times generating four
cells having half the initial genetic material. Disorders of the chromosomes can be categorised
into two: chromosomal structural rearrangements and abnormalities in the number of
chromosomes. Characteristically, chromosomal disorders are dramatic and fatal because they can
span many genes. The most common error during meiosis is non-disjunction. Non-disjunction
results when chromosomes fail to separate during cell division properly. The consequences are
gametes having the wrong number of chromosomes. Autosomal non-disjunction is fatal, and the
pregnancy is not carried out. In the event autosomal non-disjunctions lead to birth, the baby will
carry a third chromosome. An example of such autosomal non-disjunction disorder is Turner
syndrome, whereby monosomy occurs leading complete absence of a chromosome. Turner
syndrome requires medical diagnosis and is characterised by short stature, puberty delayed, heart
defects and some learning incapacities. Treatment, involves home therapy and fertility treatment
for women who wish to get pregnant. However, Turner syndrome is incurable.
DNA replication ensures that when a cell divides, each daughter cell acquires a similar
copy of the DNA. DNA replication takes place during the synthesis phase (S phase) before
meiosis and mitosis occur. DNA replication is a complex issue to understand; however, the video
in the link attached below offers a simple and clear way to understand DNA replication. In the
video, the clarification of the double helix structure of the DNA provides a hint on DNA is
copied. The video shows the pairing adenine and thymine nucleotides and cytosine with guanine
hence showing how the two strands are complementary to each other. Both of the strands that
comprise of the double helix act as a template for synthesis of new identical strands. The
replication factor that still seems challenging to comprehend is the binding of the primer to the 3’
end of the strand.
