UNI 194: FOCUSING ON ACADEMICS

PRESENTATION #1

In this first of six presentations you will be making during the course, you will have three key objectives that you need to achieve in order to be successful:

· You must demonstrate an awareness of your chosen topic and be able to explain it to the class

· You must demonstrate your comprehension of the issue presented in the article you select and explain the issue effectively to the class and to the instructor (via the written component)

· You must demonstrate effective listening skills and a lack of ego as you offer peer feedforward to others on their presentations as well as receive peer feedforward on your own

There are 3 components to Presentation #1. All components must be fulfilled in order to receive credit for the assignment.

1. Using your NYTIMES.COM subscription, research and locate an article pertaining to your chosen topic in the course. Be creative in your searching, and find one that truly interests you. DO NOT choose the same article that a friend chooses. DOWNLOAD a copy of the article. Name it “Article 1 – [topic].” You will need to turn it in with…

2. Write an approximately 250 word summary about the article. What is the issue at stake? Who is involved? Why does it interest you? Should it interest people beyond your chosen field? Why? Does it impact the greater society? How might it impact your future job prospects? In other words, do more than report on the issue - think about the questions that arise from reading the article and address them in your summary. SUBMIT a copy of your summary and a copy of the article to Blackboard before you approach the front of the room to give your…

3. 5-Minute presentation on the article and topic. Using Powerpoint, Prezi, or any other instructor-approved method, you will give a 5-minute presentation to the entire class about your article and the key concepts, the issues it discusses, and the impact those issues have upon your major field and perhaps society at large. Your job is to demonstrate your mastery of the article/topic and that you understand the material at a deep enough level that you can effectively share that knowledge with your peers. Make it interesting to the rest of us!

PORTFOLIO. For this presentation, you will create a portfolio where you will place a copy of the article, any notes, any rough drafts, and a final draft of your paper. These may be handwritten or printed Word documents. I will examine your portfolio in-depth during our instructor meetings.

This first presentation is meant to be fairly straight-forward. As each week passes, the presentations will become a bit more complex and require different things from each of you.

Let me know if you have any questions!
