CECS 378 Lab 2 - Malware
60 points
Assignment Description. This assignment is designed to introduce to you how malware can infect compiled programs, give you exposure to using a hex editor to understand computer code at a machine level, and how security researchers inspect binary code to understand software at a low level. I love playing video games. Some of my earliest memories of childhood was sitting in front of a computer playing computer games. I’d love to revisit some of my old favorites, but as a professor, I have very little time to actually sit down and play games these days.
So, I need your help. I want to play one of the all time great CRPGs, Ultima V, but I have no time to go through the grind of leveling up and maxing out my stats.
Figure 1: Start of Ultima V
Running the Game. The game will probably not run directly on modern operating systems, but it will run just fine under DOSBox (a DOS environment designed to play older games). Grab DOSBox from here. DOSBox will require a bit of setup, but the game should run under DOSBox without any additional tweaking of the game itself.
1
First, play the game enough to establish a character and get a feel for how the game is played. If you have experience playing CRPGs, then this game will be at least somewhat familiar to you. Then, you will save the game by pressing ’Q’ and then alter the game’s files to give your character maximum stats and gold. You can check the character’s stats by pressing ’Z’ and then selecting the highlighted character on the right. It will be up to you to locate which file(s) are necessary to modify and what values to place into those file(s) at specific locations.
Completing this assignment will require you to use a binary hex editor. I have listed a few here if you do not have one, but feel free to use whatever editor you choose:
OS Program Windows Frhed
vim MacOS Hex Fiend Linux hexedit
Bless vim
The final stats on your main character (the one with your name) should look something like this: Attribute Value
Str 99 Int 99 Dex 99 HP 999
Max HP 999 Exp 9999 Gold 9999
Assignment. Probably the most difficult part of this assignment is locating where in the game to make the modifications. I recommend spending a good amount of time figuring out how the internal structure of the game (in binary, of course) is organized. If you can discern a pattern from the binary placement, then this assignment will become much easier.
First, when you discover where something is located (the offset, in binary terms) write it down. You will need to turn in the offsets of each location and the file in which they were contained in to complete this assignment.
Next, once you’ve understood the structure of the program and how it is laid out, write a short program (in whatever language you like) which modifies the original game’s binary files to replace the values above in the appropriate location. It should not be necessary to decompile the original code (and it would break the game anyways), but it will be necessary to do a little reading on how to edit a binary file inside of code (hint: read it in like a regular file and save it in its original form back to the file itself).
One last thought: remember in CECS 341 where you learned about big-endian and little-endian encoding? This might be important to know for this lab...
Additional Requirements. For full credit on the assignment, I’m requiring some additional things to be added to your final program. If you’ve understood the first part, these should not be all that difficult to include:
2
Figure 2: See? It can be done.
• An interactive program which allows the user to change the values to whatever they want (not just a pre-set value structure).
• Include the following values in your alterations/offset listing/source code program:
– All of the above stats on every companion character (not just the main PC). There should be sixteen total characters.
– 100 keys
– 100 skull keys
– 100 gems
– 1 black badge
– 2 magic carpets
– 10 magic axes (the best weapon in the game!)
– And the ability to change all of these inside of your interactive program
Finally, give me a writeup on your experience doing this assignment, the offsets and file(s) for all of the attributes that you changed, and some screenshots of your p@wn3d game (bragging rights allowed).
All of the offsets should be listed in hex format (ie. 0xDEADBEEF).

{Time and weath_er have tak_en their toll on the wood_ed path be_tween your house and the cir_cle of stones. For a long time you stand with_in the cir_cle in the mis_ty woods, dazed and lost, over_come by the dis_orient_ing journ_ey be_tween worlds. But these woods are too famil_iar to lead you far astray. Turn_ing away from the morn_ing sun, a short walk brings you to the door_step of your own long-de_sert_ed house.{Much time has passed since the night you left, but your front door is un_locked and opens at a touch, as if to greet you home. Enter_ing, you lay to rest the arms that served you in your quest. Gone are the dark feel_ings that this day might be your last, gone are the pains of los_ses and the joys of vict_ories in your Quest to save a king_dom. Gone also are your TV set, stereo, and living-room furn_i_ture; a re_mind_er that Evil dwells still with_in your own world and that your Quest of the Av_a_tar is not yet at an end. {That night you lie safe and warm in your own bed, but the com_fort of your home offers you no peace. The in_sist_ent quest_ions in your mind will not be laid to rest. What of Britannia's fate? How fares Lord British? Is the ty_rant Blackthorn un_seat_ed at last, or does inn_ocent blood still spill for the cause of his reign? Per_haps the worst fear of all is that you will nev_er know the ans_wers you seek, as those ans_wers are no_where to be found in this world. Fin_ally sleep comes and you em_brace it will_ing_ly, as though sol_ace might be found in dreams.{You stand in sha_dow, in a vast, stark cham_ber sparse_ly lit by smok_ing torch_es. Man_a_cles and in_stru_ments of tor_ture abound. With a sud_den chill, you re_cog_nize the throne room of Black_thorn's pal_ace! His dae_mon guards are not in at_tend_ance, but the mas_sive wood_en door swings gent_ly on one brass hinge as if some monst_rous creatures had been in a great hur_ry to leave. {Blackthorn bears lit_tle re_semb_lance to the proud ruler who once held you at his mer_cy. Now, the black robed King slumps heavily in his iron_wood throne. Be_fore him stands Lord British, whose ar_mour of tat_tered leath_er and tarn_ished steel is od_dly com_ple_ment_ed by a serp_entine amulet, a gol_den scep_tre, and a regal_ly be_jew_elled crown. {Blackthorn looks upon Lord British with_out hat_red, with_out even sur_prise, but with a pas_sive calm_ness, as would a pris_on_er await_ing the sen_tence of hang_ing. {"Thy deeds were black, yet thy punish_ment is not mine to give." Lord British speaks gent_ly to the rem_nant of a man who was once King. "The evil of thy reign did not be_gin with_in thy heart, though there it must be end_ed. I have no wish to see thee die for hav_ing been en_snared by dark powers that took thy will from thee. {"In_stead, I offer thee a choice. Thou canst re_turn to Castle Britannia with me, and ac_cept the trial and ver_dict of the Great Council. Or..."{Lord British holds aloft the Orb of the Moons. He does not ap_pear to fo_cus his will upon it as he did in the dun_geon, but in_stead he closes his eyes and tos_ses the Orb care_less_ly into the air. The red gate springs up where it lands, just to the right of Blackthorn's throne. {"...thou canst en_ter this Gate, and live thy life in ex_ile in a place that neith_er I nor thee hath ev_er seen." {Blackthorn rises slow_ly, tired_ly, and stands to face Lord British. He lifts his head as if to speak, but pauses in_stead, hold_ing the True King's gaze with an un_read_able ex_pression. Fin_al_ly he turns away and gath_ers the folds of his cloak around him. With_out so much as a last glance over the shoul_der, Blackthorn steps through the gate and is gone.

Lord British says: "Well met, "Didst thou bring my box?" You reply: "The sandalwood box, from the secret passage in my chamber!" "Didst thou bring it?" You reply: Lord British carefully opens the box..."An artifact of astral power fell to this earth long ago from beyond the skies..." "From the world that thee and I both call home did it come." "Often did I return to the old world with its magic, and now will it free us from this prison!" "Older even than Mondain's evil are the forces which bind us here..." "But older still is the power of the Orb of the Moons!" "FOLLOW!" cries Lord British, as he extracts a small, red sphere from the wooden box. He then casts it to the floor. "Our worlds await!" "Well then, pull up a chair." "We shall be here a while."

{Far from your mind while strol_ling through the near_by woods is the ru_mor of a mys_te_ri_ous gyp_sy wag_on that some claimed to have seen. But then you see the col_or_ful wag_on sit_ting in the val_ley be_low. Strange_ly, you find your_self drawn to the wag_on. As you ap_proach, a wom_an's voice from in_side says, 'En_ter, O Seeker.' {Up_on en_ter_ing, you find an old gyp_sy sit_ting in a cur_tained room. In front of her is a ta_ble up_on which sit two in_cense bowls. The an_cient gyp_sy smiles as she says, 'We have been wait_ing such a long time, but at last you have come. Sit here and I shall read the path of your fu_ture.' She throws some pow_der in_to the bowls that caus_es a thick blue smoke to boil up_wards from them. Star_ing in_to the smoke she says, 'Let us be_gin the cast_ing.'{'So be it!' says the gyp_sy, as if from a great dis_tance. 'Thy path is cho_sen!' By man_y great deeds did you gain un_der_stand_ing of Truth, Love and Cour_age, thus be_com_ing the first mor_tal to set eyes up_on the Co_dex of Ul_ti_mate Wis_dom. Reach_ing out, you turn on the light at your bed_side. There, ly_ing be_fore you, is an am_u_let. You hes_i_tant_ly reach for it. Grip_ping it tight_ly in your hand, your fin_ger au_to_mat_i_cal_ly trac_es over the fa_mil_iar etch_ing on its sur_face. Fi_nal_ly! Fi_nal_ly! A sign from Brit_an_nia! It has to be! It could be noth_ing else.{Jump_ing from the bed, you hast_i_ly pull on some clothes. With a few long strides you cross the room to stand be_fore a glass case sit_ting on a shelf. Vis_i_ble be_neath the glass, rest_ing up_on a vel_vet cloth, is the Ankh, sym_bol of your Av_a_tar_hood. Rev_er_ent_ly, you open the glass case and re_move it. If what you think is hap_pen_ing is tru_ly hap_pen_ing, then you may have need of this. {You open the door of your bed_room and step out. Hes_i_tat_ing, one hand on the door, you look back won_der_ing if you will ev_er re_turn. Shak_ing your head of these thoughts, you pull the door closed and leave the house. {With the aid of an oc_ca_sion_al moon_beam pierc_ing the dark cloud cov_er, you head for the cir_cle of stones near the wil_low tree in the near_by woods. Strange shad_ows cast by the moon_light fil_ter down through the tree_tops as thoughts of the past race through your mind. Your at_ten_tion is re_turned to the pres_ent as you see, just ahead, the cir_cle of stones. {Of_ten had you come here and sat for hours at a time, hop_ing to once again see the shim_mer_ing blue door that would al_low you to re_turn to Britannia, to those whose friend_ship had come to mean so much. But nev_er had the blue door re_ap_peared. Less fre_quent_ly you came, un_til fi_nal_ly, sad_ly, you gave up al_to_geth_er.{With re_new_ed hope, you stand be_fore the cir_cle of stones, the Ankh in one hand and the am_u_let in the oth_er. Min_utes slip by and noth_ing hap_pens. Im_pa_tience turns to anx_i_e_ty. The gate must open! The mys_ti_cal ar_riv_al of the am_u_let could mean noth_ing else! Long do you stand there, un_til the am_u_let slips from your grip and falls with_in the cir_cle of stones. {While you stare de_ject_ed_ly at the am_u_let ly_ing with_in the cir_cle, you no_tice a blu_ish shim_mer_ing in the air above the am_u_let. Look_ing down at the ankh in your hand, you see it is al_so en_vel_oped in a soft blue glow. Care_ful_ly, you place the glow_ing Ankh be_side the am_u_let.{Your sen_ses are jerked from their mo_men_tary dis_ori_en_ta_tion by a blind_ing streak of light_ning that strikes with a thun_der_ous crash not more than a hun_dred feet from you. {You are standing in a clear_ing sur_round_ed by a dark and for_bid_ding forest. Over_head, roil_ing, black clouds fill the sky while thun_der and light_ning con_tin_ue to crash around you. Bri_tan_nia! It must be Bri_tan_nia! But some_thing is wrong. In_stead of the sense of ela_tion ex_pect_ed up_on re_turn_ing here af_ter all these years, you are over_come with a fore_bod_ing sense of wrongness.{"My friend!" shouts some_one from be_hind you. A fa_mil_iar voice from the past causes you to whirl about. Rac_ing to_ward you is Shamino, some_one you thought you might never see again. {Strong_ly grasping your hand, he ex_claims, "We were afraid the sum_mon_ing would fail! 'Tis nigh im_pos_si_ble to use any magic with_out in_vok_ing in_ter_ven_tion from Black_thorn. Let us not tar_ry for the sum_mon_ing has sure_ly not gone un_no_ticed."{Trust_ing your friend's judg_ment, you hold your many ques_tions until a safer time. Hasti_ly you re_trieve the am_u_let and Ankh that lie at your feet, but be_fore you can move, the very dark_ness about you be_gins to swirl and change. Three shapes begin to materialize in the murky gloom. "Sha_dow_lords!" his_ses Shamino through clenched teeth. Quick_ly, he draws his sword and moves be_tween you and the bare_ly dis_cern_ible shapes. {The fore_most ap_pa_ri_tion tra_ces a pat_tern in the air with a wis_py fore_fin_ger. An eb_o_ny black ar_row so_li_di_fies before it and hangs sus_pended for a mo_ment, then, with a flick of its hand, the Sha_dow_lord casts the glow_ing bolt at Shamino. The ar_row strikes him full in the chest! Drop_ping his sword, he sinks to the ground, lines of pain, and some_thing worse, etched in_to his face. {The dark forms close in around you. At your feet, Shamino's body con_vul_ses in pain, but not a sound es_capes his lips. With_out warn_ing, the am_u_let, tight_ly grip_ped in your hand, emits a bright blue glow. Up_on see_ing the am_u_let the Sha_dowlords shrink back. The wis_py sha_dows start to swirl and fade back in_to the inky dark_ness from whence they came.{Shamino lies up_on the ground, body twisted in ag_o_ny, the dark ar_row pro_trud_ing from his chest. A nor_mal ar_row could not cause such pain; it must be the evil en_chant_ment with which it was created. Real_iz_ing it must be re_moved, you jerk the ar_row from Shamino's body and hurl it with all your might. The air about the ar_row crack_les as it flies in_to the dark_ness. {Shamino's body re_lax_es. In_spec_ting the bloody wound, you no_tice it is al_ready be_gin_ning to fes_ter from the foul_ness with which the bolt was con_jured. {"We will find aid at Io_lo's. It is but a short walk to the east," Shamino mut_ters. With a grim de_ter_min_a_tion, you help Shamino to his feet and half-car_ry him out of the clear_ing and east_ward through the for_est. {With_in a short time, the sooth_ing sounds of a lute be_ing mas_ter_ful_ly played can be heard through the for_est ahead. Round_ing a bend in the path, you see a dim light em_an_at_ing from a small hut nes_tled among the trees. Ap_proach_ing the hut, you loos_en an arm from around Shamino and knock on the heavy wood_en door. The lute play_ing stops abrupt_ly to be re_placed by the muf_fled clink_ing of me_tal. {"Who goes there?" de_mands a fa_mil_iar voice from with_in. Lean_ing wea_ri_ly against you, Shamino mut_ters, "Open the door, thou son of a goat, before I do_nate all my blood to de_cor_ate thy door_step!"{The door jerks o_pen to re_veal the fa_mil_iar form of Iolo stand_ing framed with_in the door_way. Reach_ing out to help Shamino, Iolo turns to you with a grimace "My friend, thou art a sight for sore eyes! I see that Shamino, as usu_al, has been un_a_ble to stay out of trou_ble." His cas_u_al re_marks can_not mask his deep con_cern as he helps Shamino to a bed and care_ful_ly tends to his wound. {Af_ter see_ing to Shamino, Iolo fills two mugs with a foam_ing broth and beck_ons you to a coarse wood_en ta_ble next to the warm hearth. "'Tis good to see thee af_ter these many long years, my friend. It seems thy sum_mon_ing didst not go un_no_ticed. From the looks of Shamino's wound I'd say thou dost now know of the Shadowlords."{You re_count to Iolo the events of your ar_riv_al. Your pa_tience giv_ing out, a flood of ques_tions erupts from you. "Slow_ly, my friend," Iolo smiles, "make thy_self at ease and I will tell thee of the bit_ter events that have brought us to these dark times. {"Not long af_ter thy de_par_ture, Lord British and the most prom_i_nent wi_zards of Britannia ga_thered at his cas_tle and called a meeting of the Great Council. {"Among the acts of The Coun_cil was the seal_ing of the dun_geons that lie be_neath Britannia in hopes of en_tomb_ing the foul den_i_zens that dwell with_in. Some crea_tures still man_age to es_cape, but their eyes are un_ac_cus_tomed to light. They rare_ly roam the coun_try_side by day, but wary must be the tra_vel_ler by night!" {"An_oth_er act of the Great Council, and by far the most dif_fi_cult, was to raise the Codex from the depths of the Abyss. The in_flux of the com_bined ma_gi_cal pow_er of the Great Council dis_rupt_ed the very bow_els of Britannia. Where once was the Abyss, now stands an im_mense moun_tain, cre_a_ted from the mol_ten lava that spewed forth. {"Un_be_knownst to the Council, our new and glor_i_ous moun_tain left an enor_mous void over which all of Britannia rests. Some speculate that the dun_geons may reach in_to this un_der_ground void at their deep_est lev_els. It is be_lieved that the un_der_world has be_come a vast breed_ing ground for crea_tures who have grown in_to hor_rors far worse than their o_rig_i_nal forms.{"A band of ad_ven_tur_ers chanced upon a tun_nel be_neath the river that flows through Spirit_wood, where one of these cav_erns col_lapsed, open_ing a pas_sage to the Under_world. They re_turned, weary and be_wil_dered, with tales of crea_tures that mount the dark air and oth_ers that shake the ground. {"Lord British was in_trigued by these tales and gath_ered an en_tou_rage of stal_wart fight_ers to ac_com_pany him in_to the Underworld. But his par_ty was over_whelmed by the tre_men_dous num_ber and pow_er of these crea_tures, though they fought val_i_ant_ly. {"Pan_ic erupt_ed through_out Britannia when the sole sur_vi_vor of the ex_pe_di_tion re_turned with a small parch_ment up_on which was re_cord_ed the dread tale of their jour_ney!" Iolo paus_es mo_men_tar_i_ly as he re_flects upon these dark thoughts.{"Blackthorn, a trust_ed but am_bi_tious sub_ject, took ov_er the rul_ing of Britannia to calm the en_suing cha_os. This we ac_cept_ed un_til the Shadowlords ap_peared. They cor_rupt_ed Blackthorn in some man_ner un_be_knownst to us, and Blackthorn's reign is now one of op_pres_sion and tyr_an_ny. Through him the mean_ing of the vir_tues have been cor_rupt_ed to serve the self-right_eous! {"Shamino, my_self, and oth_ers thou hast known have been de_clared out_laws by Black_thorn's re_gime and must skulk about as com_mon cri_min_als. We keep dis_tance be_tween our_selves so that we canst not be rounded up in one fell swoop. But this can_not go on for_ev_er. Blackthorn and those hel_lish Shadowlords are bleed_ing Britannia. Rule must be re_stored to Lord British, if he still lives! {"The grav_i_ty of the mat_ter com_pelled us to risk a meet_ing. We ar_rived at the on_ly pos_si_ble an_swer: at_tempt to sum_mon thee, my friend, to aid us in our quest to dis_cover the fate of Lord British. The risk was great, for no use of strong mag_i_cal pow_er goes un_no_ticed by the Shadowlords, but we felt there was no other choice." {Shak_ing off the gloom of his tale a jovial glint returns to Iolo's eye. He nods in Shamino's di_rec_tion and says, "But, since thou art here, my friend, and hath naught else to do I'm sure, what say thee we nurse_maid this poor ex_cuse for an ad_ven_tur_er back to some sem_blance of health, then em_bark up_on our quest! If life still breathes with_in Lord British, we shall re_store him as the right_ful rul_er of Britannia!"
