Basic symbols to be used when performing flowcharts
Symbol Meaning Commentary
Activity / Task
The size of each symbol must be the same by methodological
definition.
Information flow
The arrow must be drawn in a straight line between activities,
or other symbols.
Decision point / Rhombus of Bifurcation
It may involve alternatives of paths to be followed or the
execution of a control.
System / Information Asset (e.g. Database)
It can be a billing system, collections, payments, an
application (Excel, Word, etc.).
Document
Any document (e.g.: PO, invoice, e-mail, purchase order,
etc.) in the flow.
Cross reference
When space is lacking, a reference can be generated and
continues on another side of the working paper.
Process initiator / terminator
Every flowchart should start with an initiator and end with a
finisher.
Multidocuments in activities
If several documents are reviewed, this symbol can be
used for that purpose.
REMEMBER: THERE ARE NO CORRECT OR INCORRECT ANSWERS, BUT MORE OR LESS FITTED / ADEQUATE. The important thing is to be able to
graphically justify his reasoning.
