ONE:

Employee’s in the workplace that has a disability are an on-going challenge in 1 form or another. Everyone at some point needs accommodations to have a fair environment workspace. An employee that is in a wheelchair can have the most challenges daily. For example, the main lobby entrance doors, I have worked in security for 15+yrs and I was always angry at the main lobby door's access for the disabled. They were wheelchair accessible, but the doors swung outwards by pushing a button. The doors were sometimes malfunctioning, and the employee would have to wait until security could access and release the doors. The fix to this problem is simple automatic sliding double doors.

I cannot imagine the daily challenges that a disabled employee must endure. I wore a knee brace with crutches many years ago in High School and the accessibility was horrific. Although the building was elevator access, I had to hop a mile to get to it. I attended Martin L. King Jr. H.S located at 122 Amsterdam Ave N.Y and the building is enormous. I could understand the concerns after my injury; of what the disabled teachers and students were now concerned about. Another disability challenge that I have witnessed, is people with a physical disability, are mentally undermined. In other words, some people believe that a person with a physical disability has a mental disability as well, which infuses negative social interactions with co-workers.

Most businesses provide special accommodations for employees with disabilities such as improved accessibility in the workplace, reserved parking areas, and allowing customized work hours.

Improved accessibility in the workplace provides informing, clients, and employees the workplace is disability accessible. This will also provide common social interaction and a wider workspace.

Reserved parking areas are also common special accommodations for employees with disabilities. Unfortunately, people disregard the reserve parking and park in the disability areas. The reserved parking may mostly seem empty, but the parking is reserved for when an employee does arrive will be accommodated.

The accommodation to allow persons with a disability to have a customized schedule is a great idea. Morning and evening traffic is the absolute worst. Employees with a disability that can arrive to work after morning traffic and leave before rush hour traffic, would alleviate some pressures of not arriving late to work. Accommodations in the workplace can be reasonable, to allow work performance and equal employment opportunities. (Reasonable accommodations in the workplace. (n.d.).
