FULL TEXT The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California, federally-recognized Native American tribes, issued the following news

release:

The Washoe Tribal Health Center (WTHC) has begun a Community Health Needs Assessment Project which has

been funded through a couple of grants from the Indian Health Service. A community Health Needs assessment is

a way of documenting the current status of health of the community in order to make plans for improving it in the

future. When properly carried out, community health assessments (CHAs) can make an enormous difference in the

well-being of a tribe or community. CHAs are done by developing a list of data indicators needed to examine the

health needs of a community. This data is then collected from both primary (Surveys) and secondary (data

collected from various information systems or previous surveys) sources. From the list of data indicators a survey

questionnaire will be developed and a sampling methodology to get the surveys completed. We plan on hiring

community members, training them to go into the homes in the community to assist members in completing the

surveys much like the Federal Census is done. We hope that in July, 2009 we will be conducting the survey.

From the data gathered we will be able to see what kinds of services and programs are needed to meet the

communities health needs. We will be able to use the data to support and justify future grant opportunities. We will

be able to measure whether or not the health problems are getting worse from the baseline data collected or

better. We will also prepare a report to the community regarding the findings of the assessment. We have

established a work group that meets once a month to assist us in the project. For more information please call Mr.
