SWOT ANALYSIS AND ORGANIZATION SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION A SWOT Analysis is a strategic planning method used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project, and speci�es the objective of the project and identi�es the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective. Setting the objective should be done after the SWOT analysis has been performed. This will allow achievable goals or objectives to be set for the organization. Identi�cation of SWOTs is essential because subsequent steps in the process of planning for achievement of the selected objective may be derived from the SWOTs. Objectives must be attainable. If the objective is NOT attainable, a di�erent objective must be selected and the process repeated.

STRENGTHS Characteristics of the team/organization that give it an advantage over others. For example, strengths are helpful to achieving an objective.

WEAKNESSES Characteristics that places the team/organization at a disadvantage relative to others. For example, weaknesses are harmful to achieving the objective.

OPPORTUNITIES External chances to improve performance (e.g., make greater pro�ts) in the environment.

THREATS External elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the organization.

ORGANIZATION SUMMARY Now that you have researched your health issue and target population and have constructed a needs assessment, you now must evaluate existing programs. Within your internship organization, you must research its current strategies for handling your health issue of interest. You can gather this information by visiting the organization's Web site, reading reports published by the organization, and conducting a key informant interview with a member of the organization. Once this data has been gathered, you must determine the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats within the current program. You can organize these thoughts by constructing a SWOT analysis. The information in your SWOT analysis will help you to develop strategies to improve the existing program.
