Introduction
Orbis International is a non-profitable organization whose main aim is that of fighting blindness and all related eye difficulties and problems. They collaborate with their partners to achieve this and mostly serve communities who are most affected, such as Cameroon, which has the highest cases of blindness. They have branches is many countries and have been in existence since 1982. ("Orbis International homepage", 2017)
Mission and Vision Statement for Orbis International
Their mission statement is that, through fighting blindness, they ensure accessibility to institutions that provide quality eye checkups and treatment and through that they believe that this will make a difference in peoples’ lives. They offer training programs to locations that are in need and face a lot of sight difficulties. Their vision is that no individual undesirably suffers from eye sight problems or rather blindness with them around. (About Orbis International, 2017)
Services offered by Orbis International
This NGO provides a lot of services to the public since blindness affects every location and has no preferences. They first offer training programs for medical personnel, increasing their competency level in treating blindness and sight related complications. They have trained a large number of individuals in over 90 countries.
They conduct eye examinations and screening whenever they go and this can act as; a preventive measure, an early identification of a problem and sometimes late stage identification, but the fact that they offer the correct medical advice and medications they heavily impact the people they interact with. These tests are mostly done on children below the age of 5 since they are at a higher risk of blindness that other age groups.
Apart from one-time visits to different locations, they have established long term follow up programs that help these affected people to check for improvements or worsening in their eye sights and get information on how to cope with their condition. (About Orbis International, 2017)
Ideas for a new Service
This organization mainly operates with aircrafts therefore new services to be implemented could include; plane maintenance services, annual affordable screening in areas where they have not yet set up branches, awareness programs in areas that report high cases of blindness, so that they become knowledgeable on correct preventive measures and coping strategies.
The New Service
Orbis settled for the airplane maintenance service since it is closer to their mission of eradicating blindness. It would involve tasks such as; constant aircraft inspections to check for any wear and tears and plan for how they will be fixed, in case of new planes being launched they would be responsible for checking for any errors before they begin operating.
This service cannot be done by existing staff since the two fields are not relatable, therefore there will be a need to recruit a team that will be responsible for getting those services done. The existing staff members who check the flying eye hospital are the only ones who can be taught skills that will increase their competency level in completing those services.
The Alliance Medical Gas Corporation through their partnership announcement with Orbis took care of this new service. It will not only deal with inspections but also offer refilling of fuel to the planes as well. They will make sure that there is no hindrance to Orbis in preventing avoidable blindness when all their transportation systems are operating as expected.
