Types of Operating Systems

An operating system plays a perfect intermediating role between the user and the software present in the computing device being used. The operating system also acts as a link between the application software and the hardware, overseeing the memory distribution process as well as managing files and enforcing some of the security rules. Different operating systems run on different hardware types, and some are designed for specific different types of applications, for example, iOS is specially designed for iPhones as well as iPad tablets and laptops. Some of the commonly sued operating systems include Microsoft Windows, Apple iOS, Apple macOS, Linux OS, Unix OS, Android OS, etc.

UNIX, Android, Linux, IOS Operating Systems

UNIX OS is a multi-user as well as a multitasking operating system. It was initially created by a few programmers to be used in small-scale by programmers only. As a result of its flexibility, portability as well as power, UNIX has gone to become of the leading operating system in various workstations (BEAL, 2020). Android OS, on the other hand, is a more Linux-based operating system that primarily operates in tablets as well as smartphones. Android platform includes an OS that is based mainly on a Linux kernel functionality that incorporates a Graphical User Interface, web browser as well as user applications which can be downloaded (MELENDEZ, 2019).

Android Is open-source software-based, but most of the Android devices also come pre-installed with a package of proprietary application software e.g., Google Chrome, Gmail as well as YouTube, among others (ROUSE, 2020). Linux operating system, on the other hand, is also a very distributable OS that is also cross-platforming which can be installed on various Pcs, laptops, mobile as well as tablet devices. Linux operating system is based on Unix and operates underneath all other software presents on a computer receiving various requests from programs and carrying out relay functions of the applications to the hardware of the computer (Open source, 2020). Apple Inc develops the iOS operating system. Company and this operating system run on all o the apple mobile devices. This software uses a multi-touch interface whereby the mobile device is operated using a simple texture or gestures e.g., swapping fingers on the device's top.

Comparisons of various operating systems.

Unix Vs. Linux: as a user of the two operating systems, one is likely to notice no notable difference as both Linux and Unix use almost similar system administrators. The main difference between the two operating systems is that the Linux licensing model is more open-sourced as compared to the Unix model, which is a much more proprietary licensed system. Additionally, Linux is very much available across vast hardware platforms as well as devices as compared to UNIX OS. Linux thereby occupies a much broader market share as compared to Unix. This has been seen in the Cloud platform whereby each cloud provider offers one virtual server which runs on Linux OS (Estes, 2018).

Linux vs. Android OS: Linux kernel is one of the most popular OS from which Android OS's framework is built. Linux has been majorly developed for more personal and office system use while Android is majorly used in mobile and tablet devices. Also, Android holds a relatively larger footprint as compared to Linux OS. In terms of their systems use, Linux systems pride themselves in using the GNU C library as compared to the android versions which use the C library. Additionally, Linux systems use magnetic drives either EXT journaling file systems, solid-state memory state e.g., NOR and Nand for purposes of storing files effectively.

On the other hand, android systems use useful flash memory storage facilities for their storage-related needs. In terms of their executions, Android systems majorly use Dalvik virtual machines for purposes of operating its applications. On the other hand, Linux systems don't use Virtual Machines for execution purposes as it is with android devices (Educba, 2020).
