A title page is not necessary include your name and the assignment number on the top of the annotation as noted below.

Gillham, D. (2010). Two ways of thinking. In D. Gillham Gillman, The idea of cultural heritage. Cambridge university press.

The chapter addresses the archeology as a part of material cultures in a certain group of people. The chapter describes the background of the author as being museology and art. The chapter talks of two cultural patrimonies that exits in the society. There is culture cosmopolitanism that encourages sharing of the material culture with other people who are outside the community of origin (Gillham, 2010). The annotation is from a single source which you identified at the top of the page there is no need to reference it again. Alternatively, culture particularism involves the community preserving their own culture. Cosmopolitanism will even condemn the people to have claim over the material culture as they believe that the nation or the community see itself better than other people. In the chapter, the author says that some authorities have overstated the total number of objects that have been stolen to ensure that the local people act as good ambassadors of the object (Gillham, 2010).The chapter is most significant since it outlines the various differences that occur in the current world concerning material culture. There are constant conflicts that occur between the government and the local people over control of the artifacts. The chapter talks there is a controversy of if cultural arts should remain the property of the original people or the whole world as a whole. The chapter highlights a conflict that exists between Greece and British over marble hinges (Gillham, 2010). Greece claims the Marble since they were the original designers of the artifacts while the British claim the marbles since it is housed in a British museum. Both the cosmopolitans and the particularisms appreciate the importance of museums as centers for the preservation of the culture of the people (Gillham, 2010).Moreover, both schools of thoughts are concerned with the depletion of material archeology through natural catastrophes and human activities. In summation, the author suggests that for an object to be used to represent the culture of certain people it must be within the original setting. This is a bit muddled. While the chapter is about material culture it is not limited to archaeology nor is it about archaeology. As you state above it addresses difference between the positions of cosmopolitanism and particularism. Try rewriting the annotation focus clearly on distinguishing the characteristics of cosmopolitanism from particularism as discussed in class.

The major chapter point of concern is the preservation and owning of archeology artifacts. The chapter highlights the importance of material culture to the its preservation and spreading knowledge through collection access of culture. Throughout the years the archeology will act as the landmark and represent the history of the people. The author says that a material culture will serve its full purpose if it is in the original setting This is the position of the particularists . Therefore, the original designers of the material will be the best in the preservation of the material culture. Not exactly, Particularists maintain that an artefact is best understood in its original context. Cosmopolitans maintain cultural artifacts should be maintained where they can best be preserved and where access can be maximized. In the case, the government officials should allow the local people to have some claim over the archeology, since; the sense of ownership will promote some responsibility in the people. Therefore, it’s a wakeup call to everybody to preserve the material culture. Cosmopolitans tend to be internationalists where Particularists tend to be nationalists. The author appreciates the government through the initiative of the museums to preserve artifacts. The people must engage in activities that cause least damage to the artefacts. This is the position of the Cosmopolitans The authorities also ought to be cautious to prevent natural disasters from damaging the artefacts. In incidences where there is cosmopolitanism culture (Gillham, 2010)., the government can take control of the material culture to reduce conflicts. The author also argues that very few materials has been lost and that the government only has overstated the numbers to ensure that the people continue to preserve the materials. The chapter also sheds light on the conflicts that occur between the cosmopolitanism and the preservation. Yes, identify these conflicts., the annotation does not reflect a very good understanding of the material as noted above. Since this is a writing intensive class I will give you an opportunity to rewrite the annotation. Perhaps after today’s class you have a better understanding of the material. If you have any questions, let me know. If you choose to rewrite the essay it is due by Wednesday, January 23rd 5pm. If I do not receive the rewrite by then. I will record the grade as a D 65/100. image1.png
