For the semester I chose to do my case study project I chose the city where I both work and live. Currently I like in Greensboro, North Carolina. In this post I will do a SWOT analysis to show the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in my hometown. I think it is important to note that different people may have different opinions on what are strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
The city has a lot of opportunities coming its way. The city received a grant of $1.9 to purchase electric buses (City of Greensboro, 2018). This is a huge plus for both public transportation but also the environment. This grant will make Greensboro the only city in the state with an all-electric fleet (City of Greensboro, 2018). This grant can also be considered strength for the city’s infrastructure.
Another opportunity that is coming to the City is that Greensboro will now house the grocery store chain Publix new distribution center creating 1,000 new jobs (City of Greensboro, 2018). This is excellent for the economy of the city. The distribution center brings in both money as well as new jobs.
Over the last few months the city of Greensboro has experienced a great deal of inclement weather. It began with Hurricane Florence, followed by Tropical Storm Michael and a great deal of flash flooding. Hundreds of thousands of people were out of power for upwards of a week. This is going to cost the city an astronomical amount of money. On my way to work I saw countless fallen trees and all the intersections were without power creating all kinds of traffic issues. Think about that a minute. Every major intersection had to be operated by city law enforcement, which had to be called in specifically for this task costing the city more money. This is money that the City has to pull from other areas seeing as these events were unexpected.
One of the biggest struggles the city has experienced is the abandonment and destruction of certain areas of town. We all know that once an area in town is run down we no longer want to visit those areas that can increase crime and other less desirable areas. This could be blames on the textile industry being shipped overseas. As mentioned in a previous discussion board this city was founded by textile mills. Once the mills closed down numerous people were without jobs that may not have skills that would facilitate jobs outside of factories or manufacturing. All these people had to find new jobs and careers. This causes a lot of areas in the city to be left abandoned.
Inclement weather is always a weakness for the City of Greensboro. I feel like the city is never prepared whether it be tornados, hurricanes, tropical storms, hail storms and snow storms. There are never enough resources especially when it comes to snow plowing. It can take 5-6 days for people on side streets to have access to the outside world. Snow however is a funny thing, some years we get a lot and other times none at all. We all know it is hard to prepare for the what-ifs.
“Gather together and come; assemble, you fugitives from the nations. Ignorant are those who carry about idols of wood, who pray to gods that cannot save (Isaiah 45:20, NIV).” This verse hits home for me when discussing a city’s economic growth and development. It takes people of all makes and models to create something bigger and greater than them.

Is there something a program you would eliminate to free up some funds for a more beneficial program?
