Facts about Television viewing per week by children

Research indicates that children aged between 2-5 commit more that 32 hours per week watching TV

In addition, children of the age between 6-8 commit over 28 hours per week watching Television.

Is Television really so bad for our children?

Consider the following:

According to Bickham, & Slaby, (2012), newly 60% of the TV programs contain violence.

While expert agree that Television is a source of information and Entertainment, majority of the TV programs may have a definite negative effects on childhood behavior and values.

In a survey conducted worldwide indicated that four out of five parents are aware and concerned that their kids are being exposed to too much of violence.

How does TV violence affect children

Aggressive behavior is common to children who are more likely to view violent acts on TV

The more a child is exposed to violent acts on TV he or she become less sensitive to pain and suffering of others.

Risky behavior is common to such children-like smoking, taking drugs and drinking.

Differentiating between what is real and fiction is difficult for such a kid who has been exposed to TV violence because they always copy and practice what they see on TV.

How can we handle Television violence

The following ways can be implemented to protect children from excessive TV violence:

Parents and guardians should always pay attention to what their children's are watching and sometimes watch with them.

Time limit should be set as a way to control the amount of time spent watching TV or perhaps remove TV sets from the child’s room

Refuse to expose children to violent acts by either turning off and changing channels when violent materials are exposed or come on.
