First Essay

Due:

 27 March (submit a printed copy in class).

Length:

 750 - 1000 words (quotes excluded)

Content:

 A clear argument of your choosing about any text already studied in class

Structure:

 The essay should be five paragraphs long: one introduction, three body paragraphs,

and one conclusion

 The introduction must contain a thesis and a roadmap.

 Every body paragraph must contain a topic sentence, three integrated quotes,

sentences explaining the connection of the quotes to the thesis, and a concluding

sentence.

 The conclusion must recap the developed arguments of each paragraph, and expand

on the significance of the thesis.

Generally:

 The essay must analyze the implications of events more than re-tell the story.

 The essay must incorporate the specific writing lessons from each lecture.

Now:

 Download the “Essay Requirements” PDF on Lea and read my comments. This will

help to clarify about ideal structure, MLA formatting, and execution.

 Download “An Essay on Essays” PDF on Lea for advice on how to connect and place

your sentences throughout an essay.

 Draft an outline, which contains: the three quotes you will use per paragraph, and how

they connect to your overall argument.

 To choose a story, consider which interests you the most, and write about that story.

 To choose a thesis, write a list of questions about the style and themes of that story,

and form an argument about the most interesting questions.
