You will also be responsible for attending 5 OUTSIDE JAZZ(or jazz related) PERFORMANCES. I will let you know about special performances that will count as more than one as we go along in the class; attending these particular performances is a great way to knock out that requirement in less time. You will be required to write one to two paragraphs describing the concert you attended. Those will be due by the end of week 10( June 7th, 11:59 PM). Beneath the Activities menu is DROPBOX. You will upload your PERFORMANCE REVIEWS to the folder marked PERFORMANCE REVIEWS. PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL ME your performance reviews; I say this because it gets very confusing as to who has sent reviews and who has not and I don't want to be confused and not give some ome credit because they didn't put the reviews in the dropbox. The featured band was the Chris Brown Quartet. Their repertoire included jazz arrangements of 80's pop tunes. I especially liked their version of Journey's "Separate Ways." Alto saxophonist John Nastos is an amazing improviser and really brought the energy up during his solos. Brown is a great bandleader; while he fulfills his role as timekeeper, he also added some flashy drum solos which showcased his incredible technique and sense of drama. I heard some elements of bebop and hard bop but also elements of fusion as well. I highly recommend the Chris Brown Quartet as one of the best jazz groups in Portland.
