Trichomonas Vaginalis, is a sexually transmitted parasite infection. Many people know trichomonas as one of the most frequent STD’s that is curable. It is a flagellate, that lives on the surface of the epithelium of the urogenital tract, which is where it gets its energy, through the anaerobic pathways. Trichomonas Vaginalis in the female is found in the vagina, cervix, urethra, and bladder. In males, it is found in the urethra and prostate. The incubation period of this infection is roughly 5–28 days. Although, in men, the infection can be asymptomatic or have characteristics of urethritis, epididymitis, and prostatitis. Trichomoniasis rarely causes symptoms in men, but when men do have signs and symptoms, however, they might include: Irritation inside the penis, burning with urination and or after ejaculation, mal-odor, and yellow discharge from the penis. Some of the symptoms associated with trichomonas vaginalis infection for women are yellow vaginal discharge, mal-odor, pruritus, and dysuria. The therapy used to treat the infection consist of the prescription drug Metronidazole, which is the usual therapy. Keep in mind that resistance to metronidazole may occur. Another way to treat Trichomonas is by using Tinidazole, which may be more effective. A couple of prevention tips include staying abstinence from sex, increasing the use of condoms and minimizing the number of sexual partners one has. Once infected with the infection, sexual partners should be treated as well. Infections may occur at any age if you are sexually active. Risk factors include unprotected sexual activity, new or multiple sex partners, concurrent STIs, or a history of other STIs to name a few. Also, many complications for pregnant women who are suffering with trichomonas are that they might deliver prematurely, have a baby with a low birth weight, and potentially transmit the infection to the baby as he or she passes through the birth canal.
