Impression Management

Definition: how people try to control the images others have of them through their behaviors

Organizations act as stages

Impression management categories

Acquisitive: attempts to be seen in a positive light

Protective: attempts to avoid looking bad

Direct (straightforward efforts to create a desirable image)

Indirect (shape image through association with positive events and people)

NAME OF ORGANIZATION OR PUBLIC FIGURE

I selected Subway restaurants as the organization in order to evaluate how it uses impression management.

In 2016 Subway restaurants had an annual total of 1.11 billion dollars in sales.

There are more than 45,000 subway locations in over 100 countries (Forbes,2017)

Impression Management

I first observed their use of Impression Management as defined in Johnson (2016) when in their spokes person Jared Fogle was charged with possession of child pornography.

Jared Fogle had been the spokesmen for Subway for 17 years. “Fogle said he ate multiple sandwiches from the chain per weed and subsequently dropped 200 pounds.” (2017)

Jared Fogle solicited sex and engaged in sexual acts with minors for 8 years. He also was in possession of hundreds of videos of child pornography.

PROTECTIVE

Following Fogle’s arrest Subway released the following statement “We no longer have a relationship with Jared and have no further comment” (2017)

This was an example of protective impression management because Subway was distancing themselves from the situation in order to “avoid looking bad” (Johnson, P145)

I found this appropriate because in order to stop the decrease of sales they needed to immediately sever ties with their former spokesman. A more detailed statement admonishing his crimes would have benefited the company more.
