Art Appreciation Travel Project: A Virtual Art Vacation
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” – St. Augustine
One of the most important experiences of studying art is seeing it first-hand. Since we cannot jet away to the world’s great cities, let’s take a virtual trip.
Take your reader on an art and architecture “tour” of one of the following cities:
• Florence, Italy • Rome, Italy • Paris, France • Tokyo, Japan • New York, New York
• London, England • St. Petersburg, Russia • Chicago, Illinois • Shanghai, China • Sydney, Australia
Note: If there is another venue that is of interest to you, please ask first via e-mail.
Consult your syllabus for due date. All assignments must be uploaded to dropbox in PowerPoint or PDF format only.
Expectation for the Assignment:
This is a research project. It must include Power Point slides that address the following topics/points. All slides must have images that illustrate your key points. Provide as much visual detail as possible.
! A map showing the city and locating the spaces which you will discuss in your presentation. (10 points)
! Two significant ART museums in that city: List and include images of the three most important artworks in each museum and discuss why they are important (this is subjective, but explain your choices). You must name the architect of the museum and provide interior and exterior photographs of the space. (20 points per museum)
! One significant work of religious architecture in that city: Why was the work created? Who commissioned it? What is the legacy of the building? (i.e., why does it matter/what did it contribute to the history of architecture) Be sure to include the architectural period or style of the structure and apply at least one descriptive architectural term from your textbook. (20 points)
! One significant work of secular (non-religious) architecture in that city: Why was the work created? Who commissioned it? Does its current function differ from its original function? What is the legacy of the building? (i.e., why does it matter/what did it contribute to the history of architecture) Be sure to include the architectural period or style of the structure and apply at least one descriptive architectural term from your textbook. (20 points)
! Bibliography of resources consulted. (no images needed here) (10 points) • If you have personally visited one of these cities and wish to include your own photos, please feel free to do so!

Grading Considerations:
• You will be graded on the relevancy of your claims, the accuracy of your information and your creativity.
• As always, if any portion of your assignment is plagiarized, you will earn a “0” on this project. This means you absolutely MAY NOT copy and paste your information from books or websites without appropriate citations. All text must be in your own words. Any indirect or direct quotes MUST be cited. Plagiarism-detection software will be used to screen your work and you must have less than a 20% similarity rating.
• If you’ve never used PowerPoint, know that it is a very user-friendly software program. The following link provides some helpful tips for implementing PowerPoint to create your presentation: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Create-your-first-PowerPoint-2013- presentation-42229250-6c66-44cd-adf8-2f5802c63f74
• Often the file sizes for Powerpoint are too large to submit into the dropbox. If you anticipate having an especially large file (usually 10mb+), please contact your IT help desk or instructor BEFORE the due date to discuss alternative means of uploading the project. Often saving he file as a PDF and then reducing the file size will help this issue.
