My personal philosophy as a labor and delivery nurse is to provide my patients with the best possible care to ensure that they receive the best labor experience.  I have empathy for every patient and their unique situation as no labor and delivery process is ever the same. I believe it is important to provide patients with honesty and compassion. I always want to strive to continue to learn and provide for others who are in need. I stand strong in making sure my patients feel heard, respected, and comfortable. I will continue to always be an advocate for my patients in every way I can. 

According to Christiansen, (2022) "Labor and delivery nurses must have excellent communication, assessment, and teaching skills. They excel in providing supportive services to help new parents navigate the birthing process." Each day at work I try my best to communicate with my patients effectively to make sure they feel safe and supported throughout their labor and delivery process. As labor nurses it is important to always be honest with our patients for the safety of not only their health but the wellbeing of their babies. There are many times when the fetal heart rate needs immediate attention, and it is important to make sure to always keep an open line of communication and educate the patient ahead of time to make sure fear and anxiety is reduces as much as possible in these situations. 

Hountras (2015) states, "Nurses' personal belief systems or philosophies about nursing and people guides their nursing care, especially in difficult situations." In the labor and delivery world it is not always a happy place. There are many times that we have the face fetal demises. In these cases, we have to shift our normal excitement for delivery to become a more emotional support system for the not only the patient but their families as well. My philosophy continues even in these circumstances as I always try to provide empathy for what they patient is feeling. This topic is something I am very passionate about because even though these situations are always difficult, it's possible to still make the transition as smooth as possible and be there in a way that no one else can for the patient during their difficult time.

My personal philosophy of nursing is that because all nurses can offer unique experience and knowledge to patients, one's age, background, or level of experience does not matter in clinical settings (Blais, 2016). I adopted this philosophy because the cohort of nurses that I have been working with consist of very diverse ethnicities, ideologies, experience, educational backgrounds, which all prove to be beneficial when caring for patients who are just as diverse. An example of how my nursing philosophy comes into practice is when I was able to utilize my knowledge and experience in mental heath to recover a special needs patient from surgery. An additional example is how an Indian coworker of mine was able to prepare a set of all-female staff to take care of a female Indian patient during pre-operative care, surgery, and post-operative care, as she requested. As demonstrated in a multitude of ways in my workplace, my nursing philosophy simply emphasizes how despite differences between each and every nurse, the differences are what provides patients with well-rounded and personalized care.
