SECTION I: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

During the internship program, I desired to develop a solid work ethic and professional demeanor, as well as a commitment to social responsibility and ethical conduct. I also sought to expand a network of professional relationships and contacts in the business management career field, with an increased proficiency in human resources management, operations management, marketing, accounting, statistics, economics, finance, and business law disciplines in the career field.

Carol Walker addresses problems that rookie managers face while delegating, getting support from senior staffers, projecting confidence, strategic decision making, and in giving the required feedback to other staff in the organization. Through the knowledge gained from the article, my skills in management and the possible management problems and their solutions will be acknowledged.

The set objectives for the internship program and information from the article will be highly important in sharpening my business management skills. The above is just a summary of the report: For better understanding and efficient decision-making from the report, I recommend going through the report.

SECTION II: JOURNAL CRITIQUE

Carol Walker, a management consultant with work experience with rookie managers and their supervisors writes the article addressing problems that come in the line of duty for these managers. The author states that the tendency of most organizations promoting their employees into managerial positions based on their technical competence might be the root course to poor performances in such job posts (Walker, 2002). “Technical competence is not an assurance of good managerial performance as such organizations deem it to be,” She adds. The author calls for better assessing methods other than the technical competence for such job posts.

The author argues that rookie managers fail to grasp the change in their roles. She states that managerial roles are about the ability to enable others achieve their objectives rather than personal achievements of the managers themselves. She acknowledges presence of problems adjusting to the new realities exacerbated by the normal insecurities that have made rookie managers hesitant to ask for help. These insecurities make managers focus only on themselves, taking all their support from the teams, breaking the trust of the teams affecting the productivity of the teams.

The article, however, fails to address the plight of such managers in their managerial roles. She does not give the solutions to these rookie managers on the face of these problems. I also do not agree with the author on managers shifting their focus on personal achievements. This may make managers lose focus of their objectives which enable the organization achieve the set goals. Managers should stay focused on their personal and team achievements for the success of the whole organization. The author uses a simple language in the address of critical aspects in management making it easy to address the major issues.

SECTION III: Internship Site Update

As the internship draws to a close and reflect back on my list of set objectives, I am quite confident and happy to see what I have been able to achieve for that period. I have been able to develop solid network of work ethics with a deeper commitment to ethical conduct and social responsibility. I have also seen an expansion of my professional relationship and contact network with other business management personnel (Yi, 2018). The internship has also increased my proficiency in various business disciplines concerning managerial positions all of which were some of the set objectives. Though I have not fully achieved the set goals, I am positive that by the end of the internship program I will have fully met my goals.

The internship has been quite an exposure to the real career world. With the experience and skills gained in the internship, I am positive of better problem solving skills and capabilities, which is an added advantage during work interviews (Griffin, 2019). The department has also been supportive by addressing questions that have come in my way making the internship program quite a success. I appreciate the decision by the department to make it mandatory for all students pursuing business management courses to undergo an internship program, which has been quite an exposure opportunity, enabling growth of career networks and growth of necessary skills in the career field. The graph below represents the internship objective status I feel I have achieved.

The pie chart represents set objectives for the internship program. The 1st quarter of the pie chart is a representation of objectives not yet met during the internship, and which I am working hard to achieve. The 2nd quarter represents objectives that I have been able to achieve while in the internship program.

The internship program is supposed to run for 3 months. I have been through the internship for a period of 2 months with an average of 25 hours weekly. Through this period, I have had several fieldwork activities and attended several managerial seminars; meeting with senior board members. This has grown my career network, establishing contacts with different prominent people in business activities. I plan on using the remaining period sharpening my managerial and communication skills, while trying to be an active team player.
