Translation assignment with commentary (Reflective Essay)

Introduction: the translation brief (In paragraph form).

· Introduce the ST (title, author, time of text production and reception), the readership (of ST and TT), the intended function ST and purpose of the TT, and the text type. (refer to topic 7)

· Based on a detailed and analytic translation brief, highlight the main translation strategy that best suits your translation. Justify your choice of strategy by relevant issues highlighted in the brief. (refer to topic 6)

· Explain the strategy you are using by citing relevant sources and readings. Additional research is encouraged.

Body:

· Highlight key problems in the ST. What types of problems are they (linguistic/grammatical? Cultural? Non-equivalence issues?)

· Provide solutions and justify your choices.

· Why did you make this particular choice of word? What other words were available to you?

· What online resources (lexicons or collocation sites) did you use to justify your choice of words? (refer to topic 1).

· Highlight the local strategies you have used in your translation? (Vinay and Dalbernet and Mona Baker). (refer to topic 8).

· What about collocations? Mention the collocations you’ve encountered in the ST and the different strategies you used in translating them? (refer to topic 3). You can add a collocational chart as an appendix.

· What about idioms, fixed expressions, and proverbs? (refer to topic 4). You can add a chart as well.

· How do your choices relate to the overall global translation strategy of choice?

Conclusion:

· What new things have you learned in the process of translation?

· Were you able to be consistent in your overall translation strategy?

· Write a paragraph reflecting on the process of translation as discussed in topic 7.

· What have you learned from this translation? What were some unexpected challenges in the translation?

ST:

Hello everyone,

What a strange day it’s been!

It seems someone was on a personal mission to ruin market day.

To explain - there is no license for outdoor markets in Kuwaiti law. Every year we go to see

the head of Baladiya and have a conversation.

We’ve been trying to get government to add a new license for Saturday markets, and almost

succeeded last year.

We literally wrote the law. Then they dropped it.

So for this year we wrote our usual letter to the head of Baladiya and were told as usual they

would turn a blind eye.

What happened today was personal.

TT:

مرحبا بالجميع،

يا له من يوم غريب!

يبدو أن شخصا ما كان في مهمة شخصية من أجل تدمير «يوم السوق».

نريد أن نشرح لكم أنه لا يوجد ترخيص للأسواق الخارجية في القانون الكويتي، كل عام نذهب لنرى المدير العام للبلدية ونجري معه محادثة.

لقد حاولنا أن نجعل الحكومة تضيف ترخيصًا جديدًا لأسواق السبت، وقد قاربنا على النجاح في العام الماضي

نحن حرفيا قمنا بكتابة هذا القانون من أجل اعتماده، لكنه لم يعتمد، لذلك هذا العام كتبنا خطابنا المعتاد إلى رئيس البلدية، وقيل لنا كالمعتاد عليكم بغض الطرف.

ما حدث اليوم كان شخصيًا.
