DR. JENNY: Hi there.
00:06 My name is Dr. Jenny.
00:08 Can you tell me your name and how old you are?
00:12 DEV CORDOBA: My name is Dev, and I am seven years old.
00:18 DR. JENNY: Wonderful.
00:20 Dev, can you tell me what the month and the date is?
00:23 And where are we right now?
00:27 DEV CORDOBA: Today is St. Patrick's Day.
00:32 It's March 17th.
00:39 DR. JENNY: Do you know where we are?
00:41 DEV CORDOBA: We're at the school.
00:46 DR. JENNY: Good.
00:47 Did your mom tell you why you're here today to see me?
00:53 DEV CORDOBA: She thought you were
00:55 going to help me be better.
01:03 DR. JENNY: Yes, I am here to help you.
01:06 Have you ever come to see someone like me before,
01:08 or talked to someone like me before to help you
01:12 with your mood?
01:15 DEV CORDOBA: No, never.
01:19 DR. JENNY: OK.
01:20 Well, I would like to start with getting
01:22 to know you a little bit better, if that's OK.
01:25 What do you like to do for fun when you're at home?
01:29 DEV CORDOBA: Oh, I have a dog.
01:32 His name is Sparky.
01:34 We play policeman in my room.
01:38 And I have LEGOs, and I could build something if you want.
01:44 DR. JENNY: I would love to see what you build with your LEGOs.
01:47 Maybe you can bring that in for me next appointment.
01:52 Who lives in your home?
01:56 DEV CORDOBA: My mom and my baby brother and Sparky.
02:03 DR. JENNY: Do you help your mom with your brother?
02:08 DEV CORDOBA: No.
02:08 His breath smells like bad milk all the time.
02:15 [CHUCKLES] And he cries a lot, and my mom
02:24 spends more time with him.
02:31 DR. JENNY: So how do you feel most of the time?
02:35 Do you feel sad or worried or mad or happy?
02:43 DEV CORDOBA: Worried.
02:47 DR. JENNY: What types of things do you worry about?
02:54 DEV CORDOBA: I don't know, just everything.
03:02 I don't know.
03:05 DR. JENNY: OK.
03:06 So your mom tells me you also have a lot of bad dreams.
03:11 Can you tell me a little more about your bad dreams,
03:14 like maybe what they're about, how many nights you
03:18 might have them?
03:22 DEV CORDOBA: I dream a lot that I'm lost,
03:28 that I can't find my mom or my little brother.
03:34 They seem like they happen almost every night, but maybe
03:40 not some nights.
03:43 DR. JENNY: Now that must feel horrible.
03:45 Have you ever been lost before when maybe you weren't asleep?
03:50 DEV CORDOBA: Oh, no.
03:55 No.
03:57 And I don't like the dark.
03:59 My mom puts me in a night light with the door open,
04:04 so I know she's really there.
04:09 DR. JENNY: That seems like that probably would help.
04:12 Do you like to go to school?
04:14 Or would you rather not go?
04:17 DEV CORDOBA: I worry about by mom and brother
04:21 when I'm at school.
04:24 All I can think about is what they're doing,
04:28 and if they're OK.
04:29 And besides, nobody likes me there.
04:32 They call me Mr. Smelly.
04:37 DR. JENNY: Well.
04:37 That's not nice at all.
04:40 Why do you feel they call you names?
04:43 DEV CORDOBA: I don't know.
04:46 But my mom says it's because I won't take my baths.
04:50 [SIGHS] She tells me to, and it--
04:54 and I have night accidents.
05:00 DR. JENNY: Oh, how does that make you feel?
05:03 DEV CORDOBA: Sad and really bad.
05:11 They don't know how it feels for their daddy to never come home.
05:15 What if my mom doesn't come home too?
05:20 DR. JENNY: Yes, you seem to worry about that a lot.
05:22 Does this worry stop you from being able to learn in school?
05:28 DEV CORDOBA: Well, [SIGHS] my teacher is, all the time,
05:33 telling me to sit down and focus.
05:36 And I get in trouble for [SIGHS] looking out the window.
05:42 And she moved my chair beside her desk,
05:47 but I don't mind because Billy leaves me alone now.
05:53 DR. JENNY: Billy.
05:54 Have you ever hit Billy or anyone else?
05:57 DEV CORDOBA: No, but I did throw my book at him.
06:02 DR. JENNY: Hmm.
06:03 DEV CORDOBA: [CHUCKLES]
06:06 DR. JENNY: What about yourself?
06:07 Have you ever hit yourself or thought about doing something
06:11 to hurt yourself?
06:13 DEV CORDOBA: No.
06:15 DR. JENNY: OK.
06:17 Well, Dev, I would like to talk to your mom now.
06:20 We're going to work together, and we're
06:22 going to help you feel happier, less worried,
06:25 and be able to enjoy school more.
06:28 Is that OK?
06:30 DEV CORDOBA: Yes.
06:31 Thank you.
06:33 MISS CORDOBA: Hi.
06:34 DR. JENNY: Thank you, Miss Cordoba, for bringing in Dev.
06:37 I feel we can help him.
06:40 So tell me, what is your main concerns for Dev?
06:45 MISS CORDOBA: [SIGHS] Well, he just seems so anxious
06:50 and worried all the time, silly things like I'm going to die,
06:58 or I won't pick him up from school.
07:01 He says I love his brother more than him.
07:06 He'll throw things around the house,
07:07 and gets in trouble at school for throwing things.
07:12 He has a difficult time going to sleep.
07:17 He wants his lights on, doors open, gets up frequently.
07:23 And he's all the time wanting to come home
07:26 from school, claims stomach aches, and headaches
07:29 almost daily.
07:31 He won't eat.
07:32 He's lost three pounds in the past three weeks.
07:38 Our pediatrician sent us to you because he doesn't believe
07:42 anything is physically wrong.
07:44 Oh, and I almost forgot.
07:47 He still wets the bed at night.
07:49 [SIGHS] We've tried everything.
07:53 His pediatrician did give him DDVAP,
07:57 but it doesn't seem to help.
08:00 DR. JENNY: Hmm.
08:02 OK.
08:03 Can you tell me, any blood relatives
08:06 have any mental health or substance use issues?
08:10 MISS CORDOBA: No, not really.
08:13 DR. JENNY: What about his father?
08:14 He said that he never came home?
08:17 MISS CORDOBA: Oh, yes.
08:21 His father was deployed with the military when Dev was five.
08:27 I told Dev he was on vacation.
08:29 I didn't know what to tell him.
08:31 I thought he was too young to know about war.
08:34 And his father was killed, so Dev still
08:40 doesn't understand that his father didn't just leave him.
08:44 [SIGHS] I just feel so guilty that all of this is my fault.
08:51 DR. JENNY: Miss Cordoba, you did the right thing
08:54 by bringing in Dev.
08:56 We can help you with him.
08:58 MISS CORDOBA: Oh, thank you.
