Complete the following template, including all parts. Fill out all cells using complete sentences, aiming for one to three complete sentences for each cell of the template.
PART 1: TOPIC
Purpose |
What are you hoping to achieve with this speech? |
I am hoping to bring awareness to those with conditions such as depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts to seek professional counseling. |
Audience |
Who will be in your audience? What do you know about them? |
The black community is my audience. People of color have diverse attitudes toward seeking mental health treatment but a notable aspect is a stigma on mental illness that keeps most from accessing help. |
Thesis |
What is the key message of your speech? |
The key message of my speech is to provide valuable information to help break barriers. Black Americans often face socioeconomic challenges, which present a barrier to accessing care. |

This source covers understanding barriers to mental health care in black communities and why prayer and faith are often seen as a salve for mental health woes and often favored over formal medical treatment. Several approaches could help counter the current mental health stigma manifest in black communities. Movements addressing their attitudes and misconceptions about seeking mental health care would prove valuable in overcoming the stigma. USC Suzanne Dworak (2019) suggests that these campaigns could take vast approaches, including black volunteers sharing their stories to expound on mental health in black communities and media-driven strategies. Such moves would change topics such as a weakness and encourage more black people to seek care.

When breaking barriers Vance (2019) suggests that another aspect of this campaign would be to deconstruct the misconception that mental health issues are solvable via religion, showing the necessity of medical care. With such movements, the black community would recognize that mental illness is not a source of shame and prompt them to seek medical help. It would also move them from reliance on prayer and pastoral guidance as a coping mechanism, ultimately leading to enhanced mental wellness.

PART 4: REFLECTION
What have you learned from completing this activity? |
Overall, mental health stigma is a big issue that has attracted a lot more attention in recent years. I have learned that people of color have diverse attitudes when it comes to seeking mental health treatment. Although help groups present an ideal option to bring people together, share their experiences and develop coping mechanisms while getting the needed help…more research is needed to establish more comprehensive ways to address the subject to promote overall mental wellbeing. |
