DUNDALK INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY MECHANICS OF MATERIALS ASSIGNMENT

ASSIGNMENT TITLE: Verification of the torsion equation ASSIGNMENT TYPE: Group Presentation OBJECTIVES: To deliver a joint Powerpoint presentation on the calculation of the torsional stiffness of a shaft and verification of the torsion equation. OVERVIEW: You are required to work together in teams of 3 to develop and deliver a joint Powerpoint presentation (6 minutes total presentation time) the verification of the torsion equation and calculation of torsional stiffness. Your presentation should address the following topics at minimum;

• Background & theory on torsion of circular shafts. Why is it important to engineering design?

• Experimental setup, methods, risk assessment and data collection. Show images of the test setup and explain how the data was obtained. Are there any published ASTM or ISO standards for torsion testing? What safety considerations were there during the experiment?

• Results & graphs. Show data tables of recorded values and graphs showing the calculation of torsional stiffness (Straight line fit of Moment Applied Y-Axis Vs Angle X-Axis).

• Verify the torsion equation by comparing the theoretical and actual diameter of the shaft (assume Gbrass=38GPa).

• Error analysis/ discussion. Were your results perfectly linear? Why not? Each student should present a subset of the slides (≈2 minutes each) and then handover to the next team member to continue the presentation. DELIVERABLES: Each student must present their contribution to the work on the day and must also upload the complete Powerpoint presentation from their group to Moodle. PEER REVIEW: Remember that this is a group assignment and each team member is expected to contribute to both the creation and delivery of the presentation material. To ensure fair distribution of the work among all team members, you will be required to submit a peer review assessment for your colleagues. GRADING: This assignment is worth 7.5% of the overall CA mark (Total 30%) DEADLINE: You must complete the presentation at the allocated time and upload your slides to Moodle.

MODE OF FEEDBACK: Group Results on Moodle and feedback to the class on common mistakes
