Ozempic (semaglutide)

It is an anti-diabetic medication that treats type 2 diabetes by acting like human glucagon-like peptide-1 to increase insulin secretion and thereby increase sugar metabolism. Unlike other anti-diabetic drugs, it has a prolonged effect and is only administered once a week by subcutaneous injection. Its side effects are vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea, causing eye damage to people with preexisting heart conditions. Kidney problems, low blood sugar, and allergic reactions are also adverse side effects ( Clinical review report: Semaglutide (Ozempic) (Novo Nordisk Canada Inc.), 2019).

For a long time, people have suffered and died of heart disease complications and stroke due to type 2 diabetes. Most of the preexisting medications would only be administered by injection and work for a short period of time, mostly within 24 hours. This proved to be disadvantageous to people with needle phobia and endurance of the constant side effects accompanying every dosage and financial challenges to acquire daily doses. Therefore, Ozempic draws my attention since it serves its purpose for a week before the next dosage is administered, can be administered orally and by injection. It also facilitates weight loss, which is an essential aspect of type 2 diabetes patients by lowering appetite to reduce the amount of food intake.

With the current lousy feeding habits adopted by people, the number of type 2 diabetes is high and calls for equal availability of effective medication. Ozempic is relevant in the field today since, with a combination of the right diet, it reduces the risk of cardiovascular episodes, stroke, or death in type 2 diabetes patients (White, 2020).
