When I first switched to a social work program, I had the intention of working with at-risk youth. However, after working with the disabled my heart pulled me towards working with that population instead. As a social worker, there are many behaviors that need to be incorporated into one’s professional identity. In order to develop my identity more, I will need to incorporate ethical behavior, understanding diversity, and differences, critical thinking, and advocating for social justice. Though all of these behaviors are items that I try to maintain, they do need to be worked on and improved. For example, diversity and differences, which is acknowledging the interaction between culture and personal identity (Dale & Smith, 2013). In today’s society, there have been many changes to individual culture and identities, which I support but need to learn more about before approaching certain topics. As for the Christian worldview, I am not particularly religious but from my understanding of the Christian faith, there are several factors that could influence my professional identity. The main factor is the faith in a higher power that helps to guide the moral compass of those who believe. Christians believe in treating others with the same respect and dignity as they would wish to be shown in return.
