Topic 2 Forum: Significant Figures in Measurement
Explain why it is important to use significant figures in measurement. Give an example of significant figures in a measurement.
You are required to post an original answer to each Forum discussion. In addition, you are to * contribute substantively to the discussion by replying to at least 4 of the posts of your classmates.
*What is considered a substantive contribution?
Get involved! Your success, enjoyment, and learning in this course are closely related to how you engage in the material being presented. In order to be eligible to earn full participation points, you are expected to contribute to the class discussion in a meaningful way with at least 4 substantive responses for each Discussion Topic in addition to your DQ responses. When the discussion centers on a lively topic, it is not unusual to read what your classmates are talking about and to post multiple notes.
Substantive participation consists of messages sent above and beyond graded assignments (e.g., original DQ response, a recount of a personal experience that relates to the DQ topic, Internet research done by you to add to the post, etc.). Both quantity and quality are important considerations when posting substantive messages. For example, "I agree” or “I see your point” are not considered quality participation because neither adds substance to the discussion. Effective responses might share personal experience, ask for clarification, or add additional information, so feel free to analyze, interpret, critique, and suggest.
The messages must be related to the course topics for each module and include new ideas, personal perspectives and examples, or relevant follow-up questions. Think about quality and frequency as you strike up a conversation with your fellow classmates.
To meet the participation requirement each week, you will need to post the following:
1) Respond to each mandatory DQ by the deadline
2) Post an additional 4 responses. These postings include responses to your classmates or the additional postings I add.
3) Include the source of your information for each post you share.
PENI’S POST:
It is very important in every aspect of chemistry when measuring substances, calculating values, and converting units. It deals with accuracy and precision of numbers, without that we would have to have the number on going. For example, 108.0097 contains seven significant digits. All zeros that are on the right of a decimal point and also to the left of a non-zero digit is never significant. For example, 0.00798 contained three significant digits.
CONNER’S POST:
It is important to use significant figures in measurement, because we need to control the digits so the measurement is not more accurate than the equipment used to measure. It is also important because some measurements have so many digits that it can be a hassle to keep track of all them. Therefore, using significant figures decreases those digits while maintaining the accuracy of the measurement.

EMILY’S POST:
Significant figures the number values often in measurement; contributing to the actual, or accuracy amount of value.
Also, it has its own rules to it for instance including the decimals points starting from left to right you count the first none zeros. Basically, it helps instead of including the entirety of the number the decimal point and sig figs help us to shorten it could we could go on and on forever.
MARY’S POST:
Sif-figs are important because they describe the amount measured and it is important to describe this value accurately.
example: 1.23 has 3 significant numbers.
