Today, the entire world is literally at our fingertips. A few quick clicks of a keyboard and we are instantly met with seemingly endless resources. What are some of your strategies for conducting responsible research in the digital age?

To help support your answer, provide two examples of websites ending in .com, .org, .edu, or .gov. Begin by selecting a broad and debatable topic (examples may include key themes from local or global politics, contemporary social movements, or controversial incidents). Next, conduct a brief Internet search using your selected topic and pick two sources of information. These should represent two different website classifications. Finally, consider your two selections. How are the sites similar? How are they different? Use the information literacy skills you have developed in previous weeks of this course to assess the validity of your selected websites and to provide a value judgement of the sources.

Have you ever heard the humorous saying that "if it's on the internet, it must be true!"? Of course, it is humorous because we know this statement and it is certainly not true! This lack of reliability is a big problem when we are doing research (notice that I did not say “googling”). We will discuss internet reliability and credibility this week as we look for more sources for our annotated bibliography. As you answer the questions above in detail, note that the emphasis is on finding supportive but credible sources. This should always be your first goal in writing a college level academic research paper.

Have a good week...

Class,

This week I decided to look up information for the Coronavirus. The Coronavirus is currently a hot topic, and there are hundreds of websites with information. I searched and found two reliable websites.

1. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html)

2. https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/coronavirus (https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/coronavirus)

I know that the websites are trusted, and the information is accurate by the ending of each website ( gov, org). The websites are similar in listing information about the Coronavirus. The websites are set up different John Hopkins website list the necessary information, what the virus is, how its spread, what are the symptoms. The CDC's website list where you can go to get tested, a Coivd tracker, the website also pushes the point of wearing a mask.

Thanks Brittany, did you find that corona virus is a debatable topic?

Professor,

I did find that the coronavirus is debatable. Some people believe it is no worse than the yearly flu, while others believe its ten times worse. Some people believe that the number of cases is way lower than what's being reported, while others think the case numbers are higher. Do mask work? When it comes to the coronavirus, it depends on who you talk to and where they stand.

I have decided to discuss election 2020 since this is a new oncoming situation. It's that time again where most citizens are confused on who they are voting. Our currents nominees are America current President Donald Trump and formal Vice President Joe Biden. The winner of the 2020 presidential election is scheduled on January 20, 2021. Several events have been altered or postpone, related to the 2020 presidential election, due to Covid-19 pandemic. As we all know, some presidential elections were severely disrupted by corona virus-related issues. The big election day will be Nov. 3, 2020. Regarding this detailed information I gathered from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_United_States_presidential_election. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_United_States_presidential_election,)

This is a trusted site. Have plenty of valuable and researchable information for 2020 presidential election.

The controversial topic I chose to write about in this week's discussion thread is Gun Control.

I began doing some research on gun control and I found a website ending in .org that discusses the pro and con arguments of gun control. The classification of .org means the website is most likely ran by a nonprofit organization, and even though someone could buy a .org website, it's very likely the information shared is truthful. The website goes down a broad list of pro's

and con's covering topics like The Second Amendment, reducing gun related deaths, and societal costs associated with guns. I found the website to be full of information widely related to gun control.

The second website I found ended in .com

The website briefly skims many topics mostly related to the history of gun control and how its been changed over the course of history. Right away I could see a difference between the websites because the .com website seemed to me mostly opinionated and politically driven versus the website of .org sounded like it was based more on factual platform.

When conducting research, I make sure that I thoroughly read what the website is presenting. I check to see if this is a legitimate organization that is known for integrity and has a sound reputation.

The topic I chose is the COVID-19.

The sites are similar in that they lay out the information in a generally easy to follow fashion.

Class,

I wish there was an easier way, but the only way to do good research is to read! You may "scroll' through titles to pick items you think may apply to your topic, but ultimately you have to read them to know for sure. If a researcher just looks for quotes or passages that he can plug in to make his case, that just does not happen, at least not in an intellectually honest paper.

Ultimately, you read all of the information to find good information. Even if you do not find "what you are looking for" (this phrase should never be used when doing research, a writer should never be looking for specific data or facts) you may find something better. In fact, you may change your thesis all together.

I truly believe something that Mark Twain said: "The person that does not read is no better than the person that cannot read." It is all the same thing. Keep this in mind in all your school work.

I hope this helps.

Hello Everyone,

This week I decided to discuss on the topic about racial profiling. The two website I chose are listed below:

1. https://www.aclu.org/issues/racial-justice/race-and-criminal-justice/racial-profiling (https://www.aclu.org/issues/racial-justice/race-and-criminal-justice/racial-profiling)

2. https://www.americanbar.org/groups/criminal_justice/publications/criminal-justice-magazine/2020/winter/racial- profiling-past-present-and-future/ (https://www.americanbar.org/groups/criminal_justice/publications/criminal-justice- magazine/2020/winter/racial-profiling-past-present-and-future/)

These two site are very similar they both talk about racial profiling while giving a brief definition of what racial profiling is. Each source is very informative and share some of the same points, but they are also different. Source #1, talks more about racial profiling as a whole not just for a specific race. It talks about how people of color have to live in fear from people who are supposed to protects us. It also talks about how Latinos are racially profiled as immigrants and how they are targeted by law enforcements. While source #2, talks more about African Americans and how past, present, and potential the future racial profiling affects people of color.

Both sources have very valuable points, but the second source has a lot more information regarding racial profiling.

This is a tricky topic as there are so many choices. But I believe I am going to go with abortions in the controversial topic section. I am going to use

https://www.health.harvard.edu/medical-tests-and-procedures/abortion-termination-of-pregnancy-a-to-z

And though the second is .int

https://www.who.int/health-topics/abortion#tab=tab_1

So i am listing a third

https://abortion.procon.org/

I am certain all three sites and resources are creditable. Some of my strategies is that I skim the paper, ad, article, webpage and make sure it has important dates that i know of. I compare it to another source just to make sure it is accuarte. I try to get a few different sources so I can pull different information from and not repeating it. Some similar pieces of information is that they
