Solitary Confinement
For this research paper I have chosen the topic of solitary confinement and the potential
abuses of prisoner’s human rights due to this practice. While prisoners serve their time, mental
health is a problem that effects prisons all across the country. The overreliance of solitary
confinement is having a wide range of negative effects, rather working on the rehabilitation of
prisoners.
The ultimate goal of prisons are to rehabilitate the individual that are incarcerated, but with
this prolonged isolation, this is creating more issues than it is solving. This paper will also be
looking into the roles of “supermax” prisons and how these facilities have utilized solitary
confinement as it primary tool within their facilities. The discussion to be had is whether or not this
treatment is justified or if it starts to violate their human rights or their 8th amendment rights.
My viewpoint on this topic is an agreeance with the use of solitary confinement, and that
prison are well within their right to use this punishment on prisoners. In my opinion, as a prisoners
you have given up your rights, and depending on the laws that you broke, you are at the will on the
prisons. Now all crimes do not warrant a prisoner being placed in solitary confinement. I believe
that if you have committed a violent crime (rape, murder, ect.) or have committed a violent act
while in prison, then is where you should be place in solitary confinement.
