due Jun 21

Discussion: Visual Form 4 5

Write

Your response this week is two parts:

First, in the video you watched for this module, Mouly says, “I've always been

captivated by how an image can -- a simple drawing -- can cut through the

torrent of images that we see every single day. How it can capture a

moment, how it can crystallize a social trend or a complex event in a way

that a lot of words wouldn't be able to do -- and reduce it to its essence and

turn it into a cartoon.” Does a visual image really have that much of an

impact? Do agree that it creates an impact that “words wouldn’t be

able to do”?

Second, have fun analyzing a visual image of your choice. It can be a

painting, cartoon, photograph, or even you’re an image you took on your

own. Explain:

The title/author

Where the original is located (on the web or a physical location)?

Why did it stand out to you and why did you selected it for analysis?

What is the meaning and does it “crystallize” a particular event or

social trend?

What does it do that words can’t? (You might even say that words

would convey MORE meaning or it has no meaning without adding

words.)

Submission

Your response must be a minimum of 250 words. You can decide how long

each section is, but the TOTAL must be at least 250 words. Please put your

response directly into your discussion reply so that fellow students can

easily read it without needing to open an attachment.

Grading

This assignment is worth 100 points and based on (1) grammar and solid

writing mechanics and (2) depth and accuracy of response.

I believe that visual images do have a profound impact on the way

someone can perceive a scene or text. Although I believe images and

words work hand-in-hand in creating the setting, I do believe an image

leaves more up to imagination than words do. For example, you can see

this by analyzing the painting, The Mona Lisa. This famous work of art is

located in Paris at the Louvre Museum, painted by none other than

Leonardo da Vinci. This is a prime example of how a picture can say a

thousand words. Many people speculate if she is happy or upset or if

there's more to the story than a simple woman. I chose this example

because it shows that images can be ambiguous and are typically left for

interpretation by the audience, meaning they can tell many stories. When

comparing that to words, words will generally leave the impression of

what the author wants you to think.

Further, I believe images can crystallize an event or social trend. By

crystallizing it, it will make clear or define something that is trying to be

told. Typically when pictures and images are created or inserted their

purpose is to make clear whatever story is being told. The purpose of this

is to effectively and efficiently tell a story and provoke emotion. Likewise,

words can be built off pictures and pictures can be built off words, so it

is hard to say which one is more important. I believe based on what one

finds more engaging, will determine whether you find pictures or words

to have more impact.

Visual images can strongly influence the way that we feel and the way

that we act. I believe that visual images create a bigger impact than

words alone. Visual images can communicate feelings of different

emotions, they can provoke curiosity and even pose questions. Visual

images also cross all language barriers, where words may not.

I chose a web-based photograph by Ronald Martinez of Lebron James

hugging Kevin Love after beating the Golden State Warriors during Game

7 of the 2016 NBA Finals. Lebron James started his career in Cleveland

where he grew up with the Cleveland Cavaliers. James then went on to

join the Miami Heat. There, he did help in winning a couple NBA Finals.

Then, Lebron James was traded back to the Cleveland Cavaliers where he

promised the world that he would get a ring. He told the world what he

wanted, and he was determined to make it happen. This particular game

between the Cleveland Cavaliers vs. the Golden State Warriors was one of

the most important events in sports history. The Golden State Warriors

were up 3-1 in the seven-game series and the Cleveland Cavaliers came

back strong and won the series.

This particular photograph of Lebron James crying and hugging Kevin

Love shows his passion for the sport of basketball and how emotional it

can be to accomplish something that you dedicated so many years of

hard work into. I feel that we can all relate to this image in some way

regardless of our gender, our race or the language that we speak.

Hands on your hips, a pouty face, a raised eyebrow. What do all of these

things have in common? They're word-less, anyone who says words

means more than images... couldn't be farther from the truth. even texting

has evolved to use emojis to have certain imagery to it. Images create

feelings of raw live emotion.

The picture sits nicely in the palm of my hand, me and 3 other individuals

who I can't deny have changed my life, for better or worse. We sit in the

photo booth posing and taking silly pictures. now looking back I see a

glimpse of hope towards the boy I'm sitting on, a story which would go on

to dramatize me and shift my way of fairytale thinking, my sister and best

friend who would soon leave me for the excitement of ship and guns

would go to the military and the other bright-eyed guy would become my

life long best friend as his twin brother followed in my sister's footsteps.

Pictures don't just tell where you've been but, also start the path to where

you are going, so one day you can look back at them and be thankful you

aren't in the same place as before. I selected this picture because it

officially marked the day when my life went downhill, and I had to

officially learn to love myself. It not only makes me realize that time

heals, but also that people and feelings change. This photo plastered on

my wall is a reminder to me that I am enough, and to fall in love when I'm

ready, not lonely.

My answer to the question does a visual image makes much of an impact

is yes. A visual picture allows a person to make up their own opinion of

what is going on based on what they see and how they interpret the

picture. When you have only words and no picture, you can only really

know the scene as described. So, you are getting the writer’s take on the

situation not your own.

I do agree that a visual picture creates an impact more than words. It

allows us to see the event or situation. which in turn allows us to interpret

the way we understand the picture. Two people can see the same picture

and get two different thoughts or ideas about what is going on in the

picture. We can put our spin on the event and not have to only take the

creator’s opinion.

The image I chose is “a friend in need” By Cassius Marcellus Coolidge.

The original painting was last seen in an auction in 2015. But

reproduction copies are available online. The reason I chose it is

because there are many different thoughts on this picture. Some people

only see the dogs playing poker some see the goofiness of the painting. I

see the friendship between the different dogs, especially between the

two that is cheating. What a lot of people do not know is it was an

advertisement for cigars. It shows that something as simple as an ad can

become so much more than it was supposed to have become because

people put their thoughts on the painting.

I do believe that an image can have a tremendous amount of impact on

an individual with one exception. The image has to be able to be

understood by the viewer. In the Ted talk we were shown images that

reflected the political climate of the United States. The impact that it has

to be me is not the same of one that would happen to someone that is a

citizen of another country. I believe that as longer as the target audience

is reached an image does create an impact that word's simply cannot do.

For this exercise I chose to analyze the album art of The Clash's "

London Calling" album. This image can be seen in various locations on

the web but the original photograph is located at the Museum of London

along with the smashed bass guitar from that iconic photo. I wanted to

further look into this album art as it was one of the first things that

popped into my head when asked to look into an image. It is one of my

favorite albums and has a large impact to music as a whole. This image

in particular crystallizes the event that the photo was taken at. It shows a

frustrated Paul Simonon at a show where the fans were being forced to

remain seated during the concert. Towards the end of the show the

photographer noticed a visibly frustrated Simonon and started to back

away slowly a was able to immortalize a perfectly timed photo. This photo

shows the viewer the frustration of the youth of a generation without the

need to speak one word which is why it will go down as one of the best

album covers of all time.
