Introduction and purpose statement

Protecting the American Lungs and Reversing the Youth Tobacco Epidemic Act of 2020 was proposed to ensure the youths have minimum access to vaping products which encourages the teens to abuse tobacco and e-cigarettes (Largent & Mazyck, 2020). The purpose statement based on the proposed bill is to reduce the abuse of tobacco and e-cigarettes by minimizing the availability and accessibility of vaping products.

Testimony in support of the bill

I support the bill due to the high increase of abuse of tobacco and e-cigarettes in the United States among middle and high school students. The increase in the abuse of the two substances has cause health complications such as high blood pressure, heart attacks, and cancers among the youths in the United States (Lee, Rees, Yossefy, Emmons & Tan, 2020). The effect of the two drugs will overwhelm the healthcare sectors if both legislatures and healthcare personnel do not take proactive measures. The bill will ensure that vaping products are regulated, and youths in middle and high schools have no access to the products, thus reducing abuse of tobacco and e-cigarettes.

Addressing the opponents

Although currently, the bill has no opponents, most legislatures and healthcare workers are aggressive in protecting teens from drug abuse in the United States. The bill was proposed due to the high increase of tobacco and e-cigarettes abuse among teens, particularly between 2017 and 2018. However, if there were opponents of the bill, I would convince them to support the bill since many immature deaths among the teens due to drug abuse due to the high increase of access to vaping products. For example, there was an increase of drug addicts among the teens from 12.3% to 31.6% in 2017 to 2018 in the United States.

Conclusion

In conclusion, after becoming law, I believe the bill will hold individuals responsible and accountable for selling vaping products, tobacco, and e-cigarettes in the United States (Feirman, Donaldson, Parascandola, Snyder & Tworek, 2018). I would also propose an additional law that will set twenty-one years as the minimum age for people accessing tobacco, e-cigarettes, and vaping products. The process will enable the country to control the abuse of tobacco and e-cigarettes among teens.
