TNT 700.3P INTRODUCTION TO LESSON PLANNING, PART 1

Planning effective lessons that are aligned to the state standards in both rigor and content is critical to student achievement. The educator much read and understand the language and intent of the standard and know how to recognize if students are meeting the level of achievement required in the standard. The state standard, or the TEKS is the foundation upon which all lessons must be developed. Nothing should be included in the lesson plan if it is not directly related to supporting student mastery of the standard. It is for this reason that all activities, assessments and materials must be directly aligned to the standard.

In this performance-based assessment, you will begin to write lesson plans. This assessment is only one part of the lesson planning process; you will utilize what you do in this project in the next two projects. There are three submissions in this assessment and each submission must address different TEKS, different performance measures and different learning objectives. Each of the submissions will form the basis for a lesson plan for one day only.

For each submission, you will use the template provided and complete the following:

· Identify the TEKS you will focus on for one lesson

· Determine the evidence you will use to assess if students have mastered the content at the level of rigor identified in the TEKS

· Write a learning objective for the lesson using the TEKS and the performance measure

· Identify what you will say to students to explain the learning objective and performance measure

· Identify what you will say to students about the purpose of learning the material

· Identify what you will say to students explicitly connecting the upcoming lesson to prior learning; how you will review the prior learning and prompt student connections

Candidates certifying in Core Subjects with STR (EC–6), Core Subjects with STR (4–8), ELAR with STR (4 –8), or ELAR/Social Studies with STR (4-8) must select at least one literacy standard from the Science of Teaching Reading Standards to address.

For  this performance-based assessment, you will be scored according to the TNT 700.3P Rubric. Please review this rubric carefully before beginning and submitting the project.

Criteria for Scoring

· TEKS is copied exactly from the Texas Administrative Code

· Assessment/Performance measure is aligned to the state standard in rigor and content

· Learning Objective explicitly uses the language of the state standard and includes the performance measure

· Objective statement is written in student-friendly terms and describes what the teacher will say to the student

· Purpose of learning is stated in student-friendly terms, describes what the teacher will say to the student, and explicitly explains why the content is important to the student’s academic and personal life

· The connection to prior learning, background knowledge, and/or student interests explicitly describes the knowledge and skills students must have to successfully meet the learning objective.

TNT 700.3P - PLANNING LESSONS, PART 1

TEXAS ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Using the TEKS for your grade level and content area, copy the TEKS word for word. This must include the grade level, number and letter of competency. For example, (Grade 6) 5.B.

PERFORMANCE MEASURE/ASSESSMENT

After the lesson, how will you know if they have learned the content to the level of rigor required? How will you measure their performance?

LEARNING OBJECTIVE(S):

Copy the TEKS word for word beginning with “the student is expected to. . .” and the text of the student expectation. Then end your learning objective by stating the performance measure.

OBJECTIVE STATEMENT (must include performance measure)

This is what the teacher says to students about what students will learn today, and how they will show they have learned the content (that is the performance measure)

PURPOSE OF LEARNING

Why do students need to learn this today? This should be written in what you will say to students and should both why it is important to the content area (knowledge and skills statement) and why it is relevant in their lives.

EXPLICIT CONNECTION TO PRIOR LEARNING

This is what you say to students about what they have already learned and how it prepares them for what they are about to learn; review what they have learned to prepare them for the upcoming lesson.
