Construct Literary Parallels Chart: Narrative Comparisons
Read the assigned pages in the Longman World Literature textbook and create comparison charts—one for women and a second one for men--in Gilgamesh, the Bible, and Medea, to observe similar and different aspects of the main male and female in these stories. Use the Myth Comparison Chart as a guide (see Chart below). When you draft your first table, indicate your basis for comparison - for example, Superpower, Tragic Flaw, Gods Involved, etc. so others can clearly follow your thinking. After posting a rough draft in the Discussion forum, notice how others omit or include narrative details; revise information to establish a complete draft along with your summary statements before posting again in the Dropbox for a grade.
Finally, study your comparison table and evaluate whether you see any basis for connecting stories to each other. Chances are, you may not see total agreement, but these stories reference common details and gods or forces behind an event. Write a 300-400 word summary of your opinion based on selected details in your chart. What general conclusions can be determined by comparing the information in these categories?
